Ranges? The cooking kind . . .

My wife broke the inner glass on the oven this morning. She put a wet rag on a very recently self-cleaned oven glass door (still hot obviously) & a crack shot across the whole window. I don't want to repair it because it is a piece of crap.

It was a glass top electric with concealed oven elements. Did I mention that it is a piece of crap? The glass top is a pain to clean. The self clean vented & permanently stained the upright part above the vent. Replaced n/c once but stained again. And the oven is desparately slow to heat up & has been doing a pitiful job with my Yorkshire pudd lately. And about 4 years old . . .

So . . .

I want gas. The house is plumbed so no biggie to hook up. 30" only so no 'professional' megadollar ranges. Probably Maytag since most other brands appear to be merely new pieces of crap.

But what oven? Full size? Dual ovens? We would have to give up pan storage for a dual. Standard versus convection? I would need a broiler.

What works?

Slide in or free standing? Do you have an existing hood vent?

tchanson 04-10-2009 02:32 PM

And what's your budget?

I have a frigidare gas cook top that has performed flawlessly. I have frigidare electric wall ovens that are fine. The big decision is whether you want a gas cooktop and an electric oven or a gas oven. I did a lot of research before I selected frigidare...it consistently had much higher ratings from a variety of sources than much more expensive rangres (even $5K+ Vikings).

This gas/gas model was top ranked by Goodhousekeeping last year over 10-15 models more expensive. At about $1700 I think its the best for the buck.

Since you're a Porsche guy, you should at least look at a Miele.

Free standing. Vented hood in place above. Mid-priced. Just for comparison, up here where the wolves howl in Canuck Central, a Maytag gas 2 Oven Self Clean convection/small oven combo is $2249 list. That would be my top end.

Maytag ranked 8 of 11 in this recent survey. Frigidaire ranked #1:

That my friend is the deal of al century. Heck, my DCS bbq cost me my left nut.

Buy a 30" DCS or Jennair for about 2500-3000 US. and be done with it. You might nbeed a vent hood. The microwave and hood in one isn't gonna cut it. We install miles of custom end kitchens, those are the best bang for the buck and both are pro grade with thick gauge SS.

Thermador makes nice stuff. I'd go convection.

Shaun @ Tru6 04-10-2009 04:52 PM

look on Craig's List. A lot of high dollar renovations seem to have been cancelled and people are trying to get rid of their appliances.

We roast a fair amount. Not a lot of baking other than Yorkies, but sometimes cookies & brownies & general oven cooking. I do 90% of the cooking so this is my appliance. Why convection vs normal? I have heard that it is more even & faster.

When I first started remodeling houses, I'd used second hand restaurant ranges. You have to build a fire box around them but they are awesome to cook on and cheap! These days you can even buy them with automatic pilots...if you buy one with pilots that are lit at all times, turn them off and keep a candle-lighter on stand by...

Almost forgot...some insurance companies have issues with them and if you burn your house down, you may have issues...do it at your own risk!

Bosch Dual Fuel. Best range by far that we have owned.

I couldn't believe it either. I remember she called me at work to tell me about it. I said "Sure honey, go ahead and bid on it." The starting bid was 2599.00. She bid a dollar more. No one else bid on it the entire 5 day auction! I thought one of two things were going to happen. 1.The bidding would go nuts at the last minute. 2. The seller would pull it at the last minute. Neither one happened and she got it for $2600. WOOT! :D The very next week, they advertised another one of the same model and it immediately went over $5000 in bidding. The stove was from a dealer out of Alabama. I don't recall the name. She got the hood off of Ebay too. That was a steal as well at $276.00 + shipping.

I had a 30" GE Profile Gas Range, which had the computer controlled "True Temp" in the oven.

Oh, and it was self cleaning! I've never seen a gas oven that was self cleaning, before. Worked great.

List is $2,249, but you should be able to find it for 200-300 less.

Or Gaggenau.

Mrs Ruf has a Miele gas cooktop and a Miele electric convection oven. She also have an electric barbeque grill and an electric deep fryer. We also have a Miele dishwasher. For what we spent on the kitchen I could be driving a 993. Now if only she could cook. Great tools doesn't always mean a great cook.

I just grill during the summer on my Cheap weber grill. Best steaks ever.

Viking makes a 30" stove. Man this is the bomb, well worth the money.:D:cool:
