Chicago; what to do?

I'm going to be in Schaumberg for the week and will have my evenings free. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to take in given the chance to do so? I've been there once before with co-workers and we went to Kingston Mines Blues club. That was good! This time I'm travelling alone so I'd be more apt to take in something more solitary in nature like a museum, or a ride to the top of some building etc. Any suggestions?

Hendog 04-17-2009 09:36 AM

I'd drink beers with Souk!

Go to Morton's (Schaumburg) or Gibson's (Rosemont) and have a piece of meat.

The Art Museum is one of the best. One of the nicest Impressionist collections this side of the pond.

The Natural History Museum is also good fun.

My absolutely favourite restaurant is Shaw's Crabhouse. Especially the Oyster Bar.

If Buddy Guy is playing at his club, that would be worth a visit.

Or, if you're a real thrill seeker, put on a turban and walk into the lobby of the Sears Tower carrying a large suitcase.

How about a few Pelicans getting together for beers someplace around Schaumburg?

gassy 04-17-2009 10:28 AM

You can help me build a swing set. Thanks for offering.

Euroteknik.com has a weekly meet in the Schaumburg area every Thursday, FWIW.

I'll translate from Canadian to English:

The Field Museum

I would also add The Museum of Science and Industry

Take the train into downtown. The college bars are on Rush Street. Visit the Navy Pier. They have the only Nazi sub ever captured on display there, fully restored, complete with Enigma machines. Plus one on the natural history museum and the art museum. Morton's is a chain (there is one in Minneapolis I go to) but they'll serve you a piece of meat the size of your head.

downtown:
Go see the JellyBean
Wait in line for Uno's
Museum of Science and Industry if you like that kind of thing
Cheap boat tours out of Union Pier if you've got a significant other with you

I once took the train in from O'Hare and stupidly got off in some hell hole of a stop in south Chicago—with all my luggage. But that's another story...

Haha, that's funny. Luckily, coming from Schaumburg, Union Station is the last stop, so it shouldn't be too hard to mess up.

Navy Pier is a shopping mall. Nice views of the city, but a mall. If that's what you're looking for, stay in Schaumburg and go to Woodfield.

The U-505 German submarine is and remains a permanent exhibit at The Museum of Science and Industry, not Navy Pier.

If you want pizza, look for Pequod's. There are two locations. You'll thank me later.
