Portable Gas Pump

I ordered one of the pumps that you have experience with. It arrived this week and I tested it out and it worked great! However, I do have a question: inside that plastic bag containing the instruction sheet, there were about 10 white ribbon-like pieces of material that were about four inches in length. Do you know what the purpose is for these items? Nothing was mentioned on the instruction sheet.

These are what I use. Mostly for motorcycle work but also for other applications like moving liquid (like Evapo-Rust) from 5 gallon pails into smaller containers.
