Took long enough to get it shipped, but just under the wire the third lever rifle made it into the safe. Top to bottom:

Henry Youth .22
Marlin 1894 Cowboy .357
Marlin 39A .22

Still pondering having the barrel of the 39A cut down...

Is the forend on the Henry wood? I've seen some early ones the were plastic.

Monday I'm up at Ft Irwin shooting all day (video that is). Actually up there tomorrow as well doing some b-roll. How long are you at CL?

Meeting with JIEDDO folk today to talk about some projects. And I have one with Navy EOD that I need to finish a proposal on. Busy days...

Oh, and everybody loves the 1894. It is a little still cocking at the moment (the spring loaded retention bar at the end of the throw is stiff) but that'll open up. Other than that I just want to put ghost rings on it and I'll be set. .357 is a great load for a long gun - very fun and good out a couple hundred yards.

I honestly never though much about lever guns even though I've had my Marlin .22 carbine since I was 10 or so. Unfortunately you and Jeff Higgins got me thinking about bigger and better:cool:

Quick sea story:

One of my jobs growing up on a small ranch in CA was to take the horse manure to the different small farmers in our area...the trek was all on private, dirt roads so I started doing this at 12 or so.

Our manure truck was a '58 El Camino my father got from his brother...three on the tree, with the cats-eye rear end. I always took my .22 Marlin with me.

One afternoon I took the long way home and stopped on top of a small rise. Across the arroyo to my right I saw a small jack rabbit, maybe 50 yards away.

I eased out of the truck and took a bead on the JR. I missed the first shot and the JR took off across the face of the small rise. I tracked him for at least a hundred yards, shooting and reloading as fast as the lever would go...eight shots later the JR made it to the manzanita bushes and disappeared.

It remains the most enjoyable 15 seconds or so of my hunting career.

We finished the UAS report - I just need to send it off. Not sure there is much interest currently up there as I think the bigger issues are for in-theater training/use. There certainly are plenty of things to address. I would suggest trying to get together for dinner on Monday night but I'll have about a 14 hour day in at that point and looking at a 3 hr drive back to LA - plus there is no good way from Ft. Irwin to CL unless you've got a helo ;)

I know I should have posted on your other thread, but thanks for all you do, Todd. I can guarantee the respect you hold for the young men and women you are helping is mutual.

When I was trying to shoot the JR, my cheek never left the stock, that is how smooth the lever action is and remains.

I swear the JR was inside my OODA loop...

brownnells and midway offer ghost ring sites for lever actions...........mmmmmm yummy!
