Hookah pipes

A young man started with my company today and was sent out to help me with a project.

in the course of conversation, we discussed what we do as a hobby.

Mine are my family and the 911.

he was geeked that he bought a hookah pipe. I wasn;t sure what the heck he was talking about.

Apparently, you don't even get high smoking the tobacco. Not that I condone getting high but I thought "what's the point?".

He told me his soccer coach was from the Middle East and turned him on to it for relaxing.

Any of you heard of this?

Social flavored smoking. It's hip among the 18-25 year ols these days. Kinda like the hip Martini bars...you too can spend $15 a drink and slowly get as wasted as the guy down the street drinking Bud.

relaxing, tastes good, gives a buzz due to hypoxia, etc. it's social like Mike said...you sit around and talk and chill.

We saw a blurb about it on the news a few months ago... going to a hookah lounge is becoming another hip thing to do for young professionals in some cities... akin to the boutique coffee and bookstore thing.

From Wiki's entry on "hookah lounge:"

In the United States, establishments akin to hookah lounges first opened decades ago in the immigrant quarters of New York City and Los Angeles, California. Patrons were typically men of Middle Eastern descent. Now hookah lounges are widely associated with hipster culture.

Many hookah lounges in the United States have chic or modernistic elements such as glass tables, plasma televisions and oxygen bars. Most bars in the U.S. require patrons to be at least 14 years of age to smoke hookah and 18 years of age to purchase (exceptions are Utah, Arizona and New York).

One purveyor of hookahs and shisha claims:

"It's at its largest demand ever in this country...I don't think it's going away anytime soon. There's so much more room for the product to expand. Only a small percentage of Americans know about it."

I've never smoked a hooka.......with tobacco.

Embraer 05-08-2009 12:11 PM

never did a mixer bowl on the pipe?

Pazuzu 05-08-2009 12:12 PM

Actually, it's not much different that sitting on the patio with your friends smoking some stogies. Same effect, probably similar price if you are at home.

Embraer 05-08-2009 12:16 PM

probably cheaper (I've owned probably 9 hookahs in the past). Good top-shelf tobacco will cost probably $10 for 20 sessions. each session lasts around 45 minutes. Three Kings coals are my personal favorite, and are around $10 a box of 100.

Yep, sitting on the patio when the weather is nice, listening to some music with friends. Pretty relaxing.

I wanted one for decoration, but the wife sad no. She is LE and thought it would look bad. I would have put it in the living room.

I really like smoking hookahs. Very relaxing, tastes great, and fun to play with the smoke. Did it very often at school. I'm not a smoker and almost pass out from one cigarette but a hookah is very subtle and enjoyable.

Cigars, pipes, hookahs, whatever. People forget tobacco is a pleasurable high. Not healthy though.

Except for the poor modern cigarette - I don't think anyone enjoys smoking them.:(

If you don't want to spread cooties or whatever, you can get plastic mouthpieces that fit over the end of the hooka hose (i don't know all the correct terminology). You hold on to them, and fit them when it's passed to you. Probably not 100% effective, but better than nothing I guess.

I did. Quit 10 years ago, and I still like the flavor of a Parliment light.
