Cleaning the pond - found a snake

Look what I found while I was cleaning the pond...

We have fine black netting all around and over the pond to keep animals out and to stop leaves falling in it. I was busy lifting the netting to trim back the plants and clear some of the weeds. Old snakey was caught up in the mesh, wriggled through a hole he couldn't fit through and couldn't wriggle back. It took a little while to cut the mesh out around him to set him free. Silly bugger kept wrapping himself around more of the mesh as I was trying to get him out. Fortunately his tail was much smaller and easier to free than his head.

Question is, what do I do with him now. My wife doesn't want him back in the yard for some reason. I'll probably take him down the road to the pond or river unless someone has any other good ideas. Well, do ya?

Find a good spot away from civilization and let him go. King snakes are very cool.

king snakes eat coral snakes, at least some of them. King snakes are good as far as I know.

Any snake will bite if you piss it off, but only some are serious about it.

Yes, but they're constrictors and non-venemous. This one didn't even make an attempt to strike at me all the time I was trying to cut it fre from the net. They do have a neat trick which he tried on me - they shake their tail fast and apparently it can sound like a rattlesnake if its in a pile of leaves.

I understand that they do eat other snakes too, including some pretty nasty stuff like cottonmouths. My wife still doesn't want it in the yard though.

I think I'll take him up to the lake later this evening. Plenty of stuff for him to eat up there and not many people.

Yeah I got an idea. Keep him away from me. I agree with your wife. I don't care if it is a good snake or not. I am afraid of no man but I am scared of every snake.

I found this one in our back yard a couple of days ago. Gopher snakes not only look like rattlesnakes, but can put on an impressive show when they feel threatened. He was a little over 2', but we saw one on the sidewalk a few houses down that was about 5' recently. This guy was in a good mood and was relocated to the open desert with no drama.

Send a message via AIM to mikester
send him here, he can hang out in my yard (except it probably isn't a yard he'd like)

That's the kind of snake you actually want in your yard... will keep away/eat the "bad" kinds.

well, there are million kinds out there and not everyone knows. I don't know any of them so usually when I see any snake, it's worse then I see a guy with a gun
