We live in a capitalistic democracy. If you don't like the ad, then change the channel. Don't want to buy the car, then drive another block.

Everyone is free to buy the biggest heaviest guzzler they can afford for their daily commuting. Everyone is also free to deny the effects of pollution and environmental changes, which has been demonstrated ad-nauseum on this web site.

Along with using such a vehicle comes the responsibility of paying the potential additional insurance costs from accidents, though. (FWIW, I find it quite fraudulant that SUV's are smogged as trucks, and insured as passenger cars.)
Call it socialism, but don't complain when you're stuck between two 400lb'ers on a long flight. Can't have it both ways.
Bwahahahahahaha, yeah right, the liability insurance for my 86 4X4 full sized Dodge truck is more than the full coverage on my 97 Boxster. That is just dead wrong. I am being penalized for driving something that will simply walk away from a head on with a Starbucks sucking, econo box. Sorry but I call BS on that. The tree huggers can't have it both ways yet they do. I give them no slack on the road or in person. I will run them slap over. I would like to see where a Prius is cheaper than a real vehicle.

Counterpoint - while it has been proven that gas guzzling vehicles do pollute our environment, what hasn't been unequivocally proven is the actual environmental benefits of hybrid technology. They pollute, but in a different way. For example:
1. Consider the environmental effects of the manufacture of hybrid components - it is a more complex system which requires a different manufacturing process.
2. Consider the environmental impact of the disposal of used up hybrid components.

And don't even get me started with the fact that it takes on average 15 years for a consume to reap the financial benefits of driving a hybrid car. (15 years being the time it takes to cover the premium one pays for a hybrid car vs. the savings in better gas mileage.) And let's not forget the extra costs associated with maintaining a more complex drivetrain system.

My personal opinion regarding hybrid technology: it is cool science, and is more fuel efficient than a conventional gasoline powered powerplant, but it is NOT the final solution - it is merely a stop-gap measure. Once all electric powerplants, and hydrogen fuel-cell cars mature and become availble, THAT is when you will likely see a positive impact on the environment.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Gee,
What are the chances of hitting two Prius's with the same tree in Boulder?

"Barnett said her car, which was towed from the scene with a smashed front windshield and hood, likely will be a total loss"

how is this a total loss?
two of the cheapest things on the car to replace. even the tree thru the glovebox is an easy fix.

someone is going to get a cheap hybrid on a salvaged title somewhere

Totally as an aside, but many airlines have weight limits now. If you weigh more than some limit, you have to buy a second ticket.
