My free BMW

Went to Reno and back today, to get it .

Needs a battery and a water pump.

I drove it about a year ago...
Runs really good.

Of course there will be some DMV hurdles.

Is this going to be a track car?

trekkor 07-12-2009 08:33 PM

Not for a while, but yes. :D

It will be my wife's daily driver for a little while first.

Do yourself a favor and put an extra ground strap on it from the engine to the chassis. Also, check that the hazard flasher switch works. Good cheap little cars once you sort out the electrical problems.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I got this car for my nephew about a year ago. He went to change the water pump and broke a bolt off in the block and gave up. It's been sitting since today.

I'll handle it.

Nice. I had an 80 320iS. One of my very favorite cars. Great gearbox. Enjoy

I'm so jealous, I love the E21s!

Jim Bremner 07-12-2009 11:28 PM

will a small block Chevy fit in there?;)

Hebrewhomeboy 07-12-2009 11:31 PM

in the grassroots motorsports annual $2000 challenge, some guys put a 429 in one. They had to "massage" the firewall a foot or so, but they fit it.

several ls1 conversions are discussed in bimmerforums.com. even a couple of companies that have kits...expensive. interesting reading for bmw hotrodders!

Ahhh, 320iS.

Great car, sport seats, limited slip rear end, great handling.

And economical.

Had a black one... best driving car I ever had.... can't remember what year mine was off hand, but you might want to consider replacing the rubber do nut on the drive shaft... one of those things that gets brittle with age and breaks on these....

TerryBPP 07-13-2009 01:56 PM

Love E21s. Throw euro bumpers and a 2.5L in it!

trekkor 07-13-2009 07:34 PM

What's an S54?

The car uses 13"rims.
I have two sets of 'Star Mazda' wide racing slicks.
I'll need to have some 13x10 rims made...

I wish I still had the spare engine from an '83 320I. I sold it a few years ago for $100.00. Ya never know what those things will be useful for...

Best of luck! Yours look so much NICER than the unit I was going to get back running. I actually had a person offer me more money for it than I paid!! I took it, $200.00.

333 HP of joy.:D I've seen them in E30s, but I don't think I've ever seen one swapped into an E21.

trekkor 07-16-2009 10:57 PM

I'm going to work on it this weekend.

I haven't even looked under the hood to see what is left of the broken bolt.
I'm thinking, weld a nut on what is left and try to back it out.

That would be after a good soak of penetrating oil.
Between that and the heat from the welder, I hope it gives it up.

If that fails, I'll try drilling it out and doing a Heli-Coil or just tapping for a larger bolt in that one hole.
