Do you believe in ghosts?

My MIL believes in angels. She has a whole room decorated with angels.

She also believes in ghosts. I don't believe in ghosts. I believe that we don't always understand our surroundings, but not that the dead come back to haunt us.

My wife sometimes watches "Ghost Hunters". That show annoys the hell out of me, with its editing and music to make silly things seem dramatic. They also consider lack of a logical explanation to be "proof" of a haunting. That's a pretty low standard if you ask me.

Anyway, do you believe in ghosts?

I Shot one once.

I think. I definitely shot something.

Don't ask.

That's probably a popular show then in this day and age...

Why not.

Ghosts, angels, Gods - there is something for everybody's taste. Personally, I have still hopes for the good spirit of mankind although history tries to convince me otherwise.

That looks like a cut-scene from a Final Fantasy game, Jim.

I'm open-minded but skeptical. No one can prove that they don't exist that I know of. I've never seen anything that I couldn't readily explain. I've seen lots of stuff that out of the corner of my eye seemed ghost-ish, but when I look around and think a bit, there's always a good, simple explanation.

I'd love to "experience" something that I thought was a ghost. UFOs (the extra-terrestrial sort) are in the same category for me.

Pazuzu 07-22-2009 12:56 PM

There's actually two very different questions that could be asked:
1) Do you believe in ghosts?
2) Have you ever seen/experienced something that creeped you out, you didn't understand, and which someone might consider a ghost, but you ain't sure?

The second one gets the good stories flowing :D

Are you saying you want an anal probe? :D

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

livi 07-22-2009 01:02 PM

Uh, no! I guess my thoughts weren't clear. I'd open but skeptical about ghosts and UFOs. I'd like to "experience" a ghost or "see" a UFO.

I had an experience in the Montpellier Inn in VT...It is a beautiful B&B, the rooms that were not rented for the night were left open. After touring the house I said this place is beautiful the only thing it doesn not have is a ghost. They said Ohh but we do have one, I asked if I could go look and in which rooms. They said either rm 1 or rm 2 at the top of the stairs. As iwasw climbing I thought lets start wt rm 1. As I was walking into the rm on full alertness the fking door to the rm SLAMED in my face and I thought I heard footsteps going down the hall. . GEEZUS that scared the crap out me...Next day I went up and tried to get that door to do the same thing in various ways. What it came down to was the door stayed open or it would slowly close on you. There was no way it would slam and noway it would just stay open until someone walked through the door. I even tried jumping up and down on the floor where I was standing when the door slammed on me. So you make your own mind up.

Even if you don't believe in ghosts, they believe in you :)

I had what you would call and "enlightening" experience in the old home we lived in when I was 16.

Yes, I believe in them 100%

RPKESQ 07-22-2009 04:25 PM

I only believe in things that are reproducible and verifiable. Does that mean ghosts don't exist? No, it means there is no evidence that is reproducible or verifiable for their existence, so I do not have faith based belief.

Human senses and minds are notoriously poor at accuracy in observations (human eyewitnesses are proven to be the worst evidence you can present in court). Unless trained, the human mind is forever trying to slot all perceptions into a pre-existing slot. Most people never explore rational explanations when an emotionally comforting myth will suffice.

Ever notice that gods or spirits used to be seen by thousands and wonderful miracles occurred.

But now with the almost universally common cell phone camera, the only apparitions are on moldy bread or water stains on concrete. Miracles degraded from physically impossible to the laws of physics to people under the care of doctors improve or heal more than expected. What happened to all the UFO pictures? Where did the miracles, bigfoot, Loch Ness monsters go?

I do not mean to disparage those who believe. But to remind everyone that your "angel" is someone else's Elvis, bigfoot, Neisse, UFO, Ouija board, fortune cookie, astrology, reading of entrails, etc. A very slippery slope, indeed.
