I've read all of them.... There are only a few scenes, the rest isn't as bad as Chris is making it out to be.... I don't get excited about stuff like that, it's all fiction...

Flieger 05-02-2012 10:00 PM

I find it hard to read books in general, as they put me to sleep in a couple pages. Even when I am interested in the subject. For some reason reading my online copy of Racecar Engineering does not do that. Maybe I am just reading in too comfortable a chair.

RKDinOKC 05-02-2012 10:57 PM

Friend had a NSX with super low miles, it was black. He almost never drove it because he wanted to keep the miles down for resale, and was afraid to get it dirty for the same reason. When it came down to selling it he was very sorry because it only made $800 difference in the value.

RKDinOKC 05-02-2012 11:14 PM

Had that no fiction attitude about reading in 1st grade. When ask to read out loud in class, read the first line, then started making up my own story instead of going to the next line. My stories were a lot more interesting and entertaining. The teacher never stopped me, but at the end of the year I was put in a summer reading program. They were very surprised to find I could read just fine, but only read what I was interested in. Also refused to watch Lassie because someone was always getting in trouble.

Only read one fiction book that I absolutely didn't like. It's was by Dean Koontz and I did NOT like it not because of the graphic violence, etc. it was that the bad guy got away at the end without ANY sort of punishment. And the "A word from the author" bit at the end that told why he let the bad guy off didn't help.

Flieger 05-03-2012 12:03 AM

It is not that I think fiction is worthless. I used to love reading science fiction classics like from Jules Verne but it is just that I have lots of other important stuff to do and when I get free time I have other things I want to do more than read fiction. It just does not feel productive, which bothers me.

slodave 05-03-2012 12:11 AM

One thing about reading, it exposes you to new words. It is productive. :) That said, I don't read books very often anymore, though I did. I do read a lot on the Internet and feel some satisfaction from that, as the authors of news articles and what not, all use different words and although not as frequently, new words are presented.

slodave 05-03-2012 12:19 AM

Max, I hate to be the bearer of reminders here, but it is 00:19, May the 3rd. Just under 4 days to go.

Come on! You can do this! :) As Stijn has said to me: Just Nike it!

svandamme 05-03-2012 01:00 AM

No, i'm saying he should just get to the Blue Oyster bar, and accept things.

Morning Y'all

slodave 05-03-2012 01:32 AM

Some dipwad just tried to shine a green laser in my eyes. I see this green thing "floating/dancing" in front of my car. WTF?? OH! I passed the source and they tried to hit my rear view mirror, but I know what a laser is! :D I put my arm up to block my mirror. I could see they were trying.

Rick V 05-03-2012 01:34 AM

Sounds like you may have just found a good place to park a set of cowboy boots

svandamme 05-03-2012 01:39 AM

I think i'de stop and show em where they can stick that laser.

slodave 05-03-2012 01:40 AM

I drove back the same way, visor down, but nothing.

Rick V 05-03-2012 01:40 AM

Sick-Um Dave

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 06:04 AM

Good morning folks.

Back to the subject of reading. When I was in high school I read over 100 books of fiction, mostly science fiction, on my own each year. I always loved to read, even in grade school. Since we moved to a new school every year I had a different school library to peruse. I remember the library at school in the 5th grade was pitiful for science fiction. I had read every book there and was just looking for anything else. The librarian there recommend a book called "The boy that batted 1000" about some kid that never missed the ball. It was soooooooo stupid I could not finish it. Fortunately I discovered the base library was wonderful!

It has been a while since I sat down and read a novel. I just have better ways to entertain myself. I can always find a project in my garage to tinker on my cars.

My wife just loves her iPad for books. The OKC metro library system has ebooks she can check out and they are free. She has read a bunch of them. It does not matter how big the book is, it still does not weigh anything as just electrons.

RKDinOKC 05-03-2012 06:22 AM

Been entertaining the idea of getting an iPad just to kick start reading more.

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 06:26 AM

I think that iPad I bought for my wife has been the most used present I ever got her. It is in her hands almost all the time when she is home. If she is not reading a book or email or surfing the web she is playing a game.

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 06:44 AM

What happend to VAS? I have not seen him post in this thread in a while. Did he pull a Markus on us?

Porsche-poor 05-03-2012 06:45 AM

Morning all.

Looks like he did.

RKDinOKC 05-03-2012 06:48 AM

That's kinda what I am afraid of, becoming an iPotato. Especially with Angry Birds in Space out.

svandamme 05-03-2012 06:54 AM

i don 't like reading on ipad.. it's tiring on the eyes.

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 06:58 AM

My wife finds it easier to read on the iPad that a regular book. It has a night mode so the page goes balck and the text is white. She can read in bed and not even need the lamp on. The only place the iPad sucks to read is outside in the sun. If I ever came home and saw my wife sitting in the sun I would ask who she was and what she did with my wife.

RKDinOKC 05-03-2012 07:01 AM

Water heater just ate all my cash so the iPad thing is off the radar for a while.

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 07:38 AM

But everyone is happy that you can take a shower again!

Jim Richards 05-03-2012 07:51 AM

My book consumption was really jump-started by getting an iPhone and the Kindle app. I also started using my wife's iPad when I can pry it away from her. :)

This. :D

RKDinOKC 05-03-2012 07:55 AM

I can take cold showers. Not fun, but can be survived. Friend of mine was a penny pincher before he got married. He turned off his gas to save money. He only took a shower once a week at a local health club. I know, makes no sense. Health club costs a lot more than gas for hot water.

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 08:01 AM

When I first got my iPhone it came with a short story I read on the phone. That was tedious. The phone is just too small of a device to read a book. I suspect someday I will get my wife a new iPad and I will use her old one. There are several magazines I would convert to digital subscriptions if I used an iPad. I download one copy of AutoWeek that was free and it was identical to the printed version. the iPhone is just too small for a magazine. It was constant zoom in and out.

tweezers74 05-03-2012 08:36 AM

I have an iPad but I use my iPhone more for reading. But the reason being I am on the go all the time. I ALWAYS have my phone with me so it is easy to pick it up and read a couple pages on my Kindle app. I never have my iPad on me unless I am in my hotel room or home. So yes, it is easier to read but I have found I still use my iPhone way more. But that is unique to me. I think most people like to read on the iPad better.

RKDinOKC 05-03-2012 08:43 AM

My sister-in-law likes her actual kindle better for reading, but you couldn't pry her iPad away from her for nothin.

porsche4life 05-03-2012 09:43 AM

I've read with the kindle app on the iPad, and I like it. But I prefer reading on my kindle, it's smaller, lighter, and easier on the eyes. You do need a light source though.

Oh and recharging once every few months is pretty cool too. :)

tweezers74 05-03-2012 09:46 AM

I am thinking I could have been a trauma nurse. You see some interesting stuff here... And you can be a bad a$$.

But then again, you see the epitome of stupidity here too.

Yes. If all goes as planned then this weekend will qualify as a "win". I just hope that if my other friend can't go then I can convince the girl to go anyway.

I read a lot more online than I do in print. What I read is mostly newsletters and online magazines. Racecar Engineering, Machine Design, the SAE Automotive Engineering Magazine, and various other technical publications. I also will occasionally read a BMWCCA story or Autoweek story (I get their daily email newsletter).

The Racecar Engineering online subscription I think is less than half the price of my old print subscription, but then it is shipping from the UK. My Dad hates reading on the computer, though. I like it. Must be a generational thing.

Stijn, you ever see the movie "Happy, Texas"? It's quite funny.

(There is a real town called Happy, Texas, by the way.)

GH85Carrera 05-03-2012 10:03 AM

I hate to have to read much on my computer. If I have a long technical article I will just print it and read that. Maybe it is the head angle, but looking down just seems more natural to me.

Jim Richards 05-03-2012 10:16 AM

The building department signed off our final inspection for the window replacement project we started right after Christmas. Along the way we ended up having to do a whole house energy analysis, install insulation in the walls and attic, and replace our water heater with a tankless unit! We were planning on doing the insulation before this whole thing started, just not so soon. All because we inadvertently bought windows made in CA, by a CA company, through a CA distributor, that didn't quite meet the CA building code for energy efficiency!

At least I feel relieved now, and can fill the rest of my week here with smaller projects that are on my to-do list.

nope and based on the trailer , won't.

Jim Richards 05-03-2012 10:19 AM

I hate installing insulation batts in the attic. How I ever talked myself into doing this I'll never know.

The funny thing is that I hate looking down to read. It hurts my neck. I prefer reading with my laptop up on my desk. My desk is kind of high, though. So I am only looking down at a slight angle. Enough that I can keep my head facing basically forward and just look down slightly with my eyes.

Well, I don't know where the Blue Oyster Bar is from but whenever something "fabulous" is being discussed I think of the Happy Texas movie.
