Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 03:37 AM

Morning Richard/Jim.

Hows bee ya on this fine summer evening?

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 03:41 AM

I was fixing another leak in the dripper reticulation out the front this arvo and the Banksia was totally chockas with bees. Had to take a photo or two. :)

They let me get pretty close too, but I didn't press my luck for long.

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 03:52 AM

pre-oz day celebrations at work tomorrow (oz day on sunday - drunk post warning). We're having a Barbie lunch put on by the company. They want us to get into the theme. I'm wearing this t-shirt.

Good morning folks.

Jeff, are the bees down there some deadly one sting and ya die type of critter like so many of the spiders and snakes down there?

I guess you don't have to worry about getting the killer bees like we have had invading from the south.

Good Morning folks.

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 05:25 AM

Morning Glen

Na, the bees are one of the few things that are relatively harmless (unless your allergic to 'em). They hurt like fcuk for a short while (I've only ever been stung once but never want it to happen again).

There are also native bees about. They are smaller than these ones and rarely sting.

GH85Carrera 01-23-2014 05:32 AM

Wow, I figured it would be like the little octopus or the snail ot the little jelly fish that will kill a grown man in minutes.

It is nice to hear not everything is deadly. ;)

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 05:33 AM

Got an email first up this morning, warning of snakes and scorpions spotted within the compound.

Very rare to see either during the day but it does happen sometimes.

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 05:40 AM

Them bees were very busy today, and the banksia had only just flowered today - quite pretty. Usually we miss it. It'll be even more spectacular tomorrow. Prolly more bees too.

Outback Porsche 01-23-2014 05:41 AM

I wish I knew where their honey pot was. Can't beat wild honey....mmmm

Flies with brothers make gentler lovers
Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Flies who play the mating game while also living with their brothers are gentler to females during sex and tend to hassle them less, according a study by British scientists.

The study found that unrelated male flies compete more fiercely for female attention than related flies, pestering them more often for sex and leaving them little time to sleep or eat.

"Brothers don't need to compete so much with each other for female attention since their genes will get passed on if their sibling mates successfully anyway," said Dr Tommaso Pizzari of Oxford University's zoology department, who led the study.

"Their more relaxed attitude to mating results in fewer fights and they also harm the females less as their courting is not so aggressive."

The scientists also found that female mates of competing unrelated flies tend to have shorter reproductive lives and produce fewer offspring when males constantly harass them.

According to the research, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, fly courtship is complex and involves a kind of foreplay of singing and genital licking.

"Repeated harassment of this sort may physically damage females as well as leaving them less time to get the food and rest they require for a healthy life," Pizzari said.

I just thought you all should know.

RKDinOKC 01-23-2014 09:47 AM

Fly courtship sounds an awfully lot like the band KISS.

HHI944 01-23-2014 10:03 AM

Well, should have the estimate on the rover today...

GH85Carrera 01-23-2014 10:58 AM

So you estimate you will get your estimate.

Porsche-poor 01-23-2014 12:13 PM

yawn! at least today I get a lunch break.

Met a guy from Oklahoma last night. He moved out here to make music.

yup, they told me by end of business today. Everytime I look at the truck I something else. There's actually some sheet metal damage on the right side, right at the edge of where some trim goes....not horrible aesthetically, but it'd be god awful to try to repair with all the bends in the area and it's crinkled in one spot pretty bad...

RKDinOKC 01-23-2014 01:32 PM

$4263.29, just a rough guestimate.

GH85Carrera 01-23-2014 01:36 PM

No, a hundred bucks would be a ROUGH estimate.

HHI944 01-23-2014 01:39 PM

Somewhere between the two is my guess. The bumper and all related bits is 1k in parts

RKDinOKC 01-23-2014 03:27 PM

So...If you can get the parts for $1K, then parts would be billed by the body shop as $1782.63 including tax, with 15.7 hours labor at $135/hr or $2,119.50, totaling $3902.13. Again just a rough guesstimate.

That's all I could think of when walking to / from the office this week. Meanwhile, it's in the 70s at my house (not my condo :().
