G'day David

i think that those problems are pretty common in such areas. our indian reservations have some SERIOUS problems with alcohol and drugs and poverty. those problems seem to chase each others' tails.

I was recently talking to an ED doctor, she was from Perth. She came to the Alice to expedite years of experience in trauma medicine. Her 'rotation' was for three months. Apparently it's a common thing to do in the Oz medical community.

good lord.

Outback Porsche 07-02-2012 07:03 PM

I hope I'm not frightening anyone off coming here. It really is a beautiful spot in the world....just don't go walking alone at night....better yet, don't go walking at night period ;)

oh yeah, and make sure you have photo ID on you if you want to buy take-away alcohol (no ID, no grog). :D

Flieger 07-02-2012 07:22 PM

Wow, you make me want to give up drinking -- and I never even started!

tweezers74 07-02-2012 07:28 PM

That picture makes me sad on so many levels. :(

It's not cheap up here at more than $50 a carton, but it is one of the drinks of choice.

All alcohol up here is expensive, even the chattel cardboard, aimed at discouraging the activities in the photo and the associated antisocial behaviors. We even have restricted selling hours (prohibition to some degree). None of it works. If it can't be bought, it gets stolen from homes and businesses.

So the dollars are pretty close in value from US dollars to Australian dollars. A case of 24 cheap beers here would be 25 bucks or so.

nynor 07-02-2012 07:36 PM

max, that isn't drinking. that is suicide. slow. suicide.

you drink the good stuff. 24 PBR's can be had for about $14. even full strength cheap beers can be had for about .80 each. :)

HHI944 07-02-2012 07:47 PM

About to hit some hooch from the ga mountains.........180 proof and tastes like apple cider.........I am officially beyond sober......ish

Outback Porsche 07-02-2012 07:52 PM

Everywhere else, light (2.5% and less) and mid (3.3-3.5%) strength beer is around the $30 mark, while heavies (full strength beer - more than 3.5%) are around $40 for a carton. Premium beers go up from there. Adjust the price by about $10 for here (and possibly more for more remote places).

In some remote places the don't sell heavy beer at all due to supply restrictions. In these places adjust the price of light and mids to that of heavies. A couple of years ago I had to pay $55 for a carton of mids up on Cape York.

Just looked at the dollar conversion and it's 1 U.S. dollar = 0.974848898 Australian dollars.

You guys have cheap beer.

nynor 07-02-2012 07:59 PM

interesting. i think the only time i've ever had beer that was less than 4% by volume (3.2 by weight) was when i brewed it myself.

at those prices, i could drink, except what i made myself.

tweezers74 07-02-2012 09:22 PM

It isn't until the 14th. And the series doesn't start until August. The 14th is the "pre-season" class. :)

Sorry.
