Thinking of purchasing a .22 pistol

Got invited to go shooting this weekend, first time I'd ever even held a gun.
It was extremely enjoyable, so now I looking into buy one.
Looking at a .22, just for target practice, nothing too expensive, but good quality.
What advice can the Pelican Brain Trust come up with?
Thanks in advance.

Years ago when I first touched gun, I thought the same. Several weeks later, I must have a 9mm. Maybe you want go to the range again and try (rent) several different sizes and spend times with them before spending the $$ to buy one.

Here's one I'm thinking of picking up (about $600 brand new in the box):

The nice thing about a .22 pistol is they're dirt cheap to practice with. 9mm and other common pistol calibers are getting awfully expensive to blow downrange, although I would strongly recommend getting a larger caliber pistol (9mm, .40, .380, .44, .45, etc.) if you have any thoughts of having one for home defense. Better still, consider a 12-gauge shotgun. They're inexpensive enough.

I stay reasonably current with my various pistols, but as said above, it'd be awfully nice to have a .22 so I could go to the range more often. It's just too expensive to go and blow a couple hundred rounds of .45 or 9mm every couple of weeks.

One more reason to love AZ. You probably don't also have the stupid-azz 10-round magazine either I'll bet...

Yep.

In 2005 I bought a 12 gauge shotgun. It was to be my only gun. A month later I had another shotgun and a .22LR rifle. Within a year I had 3 shotguns, a rifle, and 9mm Ruger. Within two years I had 5 shotguns, 2 rifles, and 2 handguns.

Right now, I'm not sure what all I have. It's too much to remember off the top of my head.

I hear good things about the Sig Mosquito.

You could also get a .22 kit for a 1911 and then have 2 guns in one.

A friend of mine bought a Sig with a .22 barrel and a 9mm barrel. Not sure which model.

He prefers having few guns that he can convert to various calibers, I prefer having a dedicated gun for each caliber.

Those .22 conversion kits for larger caliber pistols are pretty expensive. I've never had the itch for a SIG conversion kit. Buying a Walther P-22 just for my wife was cheaper.

I'm about to go look at a P226R for $499. So I may be selling my non-railed one in a few days.

That's interesting....

.22's are fun for shooting at cans or squirrels, but if you are going to a range you would probably be happier with a 9mm. Just my opinion.

flatbutt 09-22-2009 12:12 PM

WRT to practice and getting your technique right....I'm thinking a .22 is just fine. Would moving up to a larger calibre after learning on a .22 be that different?

porsche4life 09-22-2009 12:18 PM

Look at the Browning Buckmarks and the Walther P22. Both are nice small accurate pistols.
