I've never sold a vehicle and regretted it, but I've had a few that were wrecked that I miss:

I owned a late 80's Saab 900 Turbo Cab for about 3 days before I wrapped it around a tree at 80 mph. Unrecognizable after that. Wish I got more out of my $250 it cost me..

I went in with a buddy on an old Beetle that we bought from a guy for $100. Got it running pretty nicely, took it out on the sand dunes. 3 hours went by before we flipped it. It was so rusted, the body and pan sheared apart. The right front wheel ended up in the passenger windshield area.

I also helped a friend of mine prep an 86 Civic for the Rally America. He practiced with the car for a few months. Once of the few times I wasn't codriving, he wraps it around a tree at 70mph. This time, the passenger wheel came through the firewall and displaced the passenger seat. I was sad to see that car go...

1957 356 Speedster, good rust free roller with engine & trans, sold for $1,500 in 1975
1957 Alfa 1900C Super Sprint, with Superleggera aluminum body, running project, sold for $1,800 in 1978
1961 Super 90 coupe, complete running project (1750 kit with roller crank), sold for $2,000 in 1979

Damn, I wish I had the space to keep them. And didn't need the money at the time.

The one that almost killed me was trading in my 1990 Chevy Beretta for my beloved Jeep. I should have bought the Jeep and kept the Beretta. I had over 200000 miles on that car and it still looked and ran like new. I finally forgave myself when I bought my 944 to park next to the Jeep.

The ones that I should have kept.

1959 Chevrolet Impalla.

Ditto on regretting parting ways with the 1972 240z's. I sold mine with some rust issues in the late 80's while in college for a few hundred dollars. Fixing those rust issues would be simple for me now.

I may just have to buy another someday in need of restoration before the prices get too ridiculous.

"Well, the gigolo's jumpin' salty
Ain't no trade out on the streets
Half past the unlucky
And the hawk's a front row seat
Dressed in full orchestration
Stage door Johnny's got to pay
And sent him home
Talking 'bout the one that got away

Well, could've been on Easy Street
Could've been a wheel
With irons in the fire
And all them business deals
But the last of the big time losers
Shouted before he drove away
I'll be right back as soon as I crack
The one that got away

The ambulance drivers, they don't give a ****
They just want to get off work
And the short stop
And the victim already gone berserk
And the shroud tailor measures him
For a deep six holiday
The stiff is froze, the case is closed
On the one that got away

Now Jim Crow's directing traffic
With them cemetery blues
With them peculiar looking trousers
Them old Italian shoes
And a wooden kimono was all ready
To drop in San Francisco Bay
But he's mumbling something
All about the one that got away

Costello was the champion
At the St.Moritz Hotel
And the best this side of Fairfax
Reliable sources tell
But his reputation is at large
And he's at Ben Frank's every day
Waiting for the one that got away

He's got a snake skin sport shirt
And he looks like Vincent Price
With a little piece of chicken
And he's carving off a slice
But someone tipped her off
She'll be doing a Houdini now any day
She shook his hustle
A Greyhound bus'll take the one that got away

Andre is at the piano
Behind the Ivar in the sewers
With a buck a shot for pop tunes
And a fin for guided tours
He could've been in Casablanca
He stood in line out there all day
Now he's spilling whiskey
And learning songs about a one that got away

Well, I've lost my equilibrium
And my car keys and my pride
The tattoo parlor's warm
And so I hustle there inside
And the grinding of the buzz-saw
"What you want that thing to say?"
I says, "Just don't misspell her name
Buddy, she's the one that got away""

It's threads like these that remind me to never, ever, ever, sell the 911, unless it's that or feed my family. I've contemplated trading/selling it for a newer 911, with more power, comfort, cabrio, etc. and every time I back away from it. I know when I'm old and grey I'll be really happy I kept it, especially when I see my kids and grandkids enjoying it. That is, if you can still buy gasoline in 2050...

If this were a vehicle thread I'd add my 1986 HD Wide Glide. Was a hybrid of sorts. HD had just been repurchased from AMF a few years earlier by a few HD executives. They had to make sure quality was up to snuff. Was the 2nd or 3rd year of the evo and they over engineered the motor. The thing was bullet proof. It was in the original 4 speed frame, (the lowest frame HD ever made), vs. the huge, heavy, & ugly Dynaglide frames, belt drive vs. chain, evo engine vs. shovelhead, and the last year of having a factory kickstart. It WAS the bike that introduced the ducktail rear fender. Loved it when posers would say, "Oh you added a Softtail fender".
Was an awesome bike.

57' Austin Healey 100-M ex factory race car. Sold it to buy a Porsche 911 back in the mid 80's. Who knew it would be worth so much now, and the Porsche worth not so much! Live and learn! Now if this thread was about the ones you looked at and didn't buy, but should have, I would have a long list!

Ouch!

I have been looking for a good Le Mans spec. 100-M for the past couple of years—and feel your pain!

I had a 1966 Ford Fairlane GT Dark Metalic Green, "big Block" 390 that was warmed over, Top loader 4 speed and 3.70 gears.

I was trying to sell it in late '87 when it got hit by a off-duty cop with beer on his breath at 7:30 in the morning.

I drove it like this!

Yes. Not the one in the photo, but one identical to it in all respects—including colour. Absolutely perfect condition and low miles.

I sold it (and some other fine cars) over the years because I was transferred a lot around the world with my work, and moving the toys was often very difficult.

But this one I regret selling the most.
