Ural anyone?

Need a third bike like I need a third dog. . .but. . .kids are bugging me to get a Ural after showing them some pictures. Does anyone own one? Know anyone who owns one? Interested in experiences. Probably would never be used for crossing the tundra, but might be an interesting addition to the stable. Thoughts?

Those wheels look pretty skinny

Granite 11-24-2009 09:12 PM

I checked one out recently and the drawback I saw was the top speed of like 60 Mph. It just didn't make sense to me. I could never take it anywhere other than around town and a few dirt roads. The build looks solid though. The guy selling it never took it further than 3 miles from his house because it was hassle to load into his trailer.

I looked into them because of the side car, but almost everyone who had one said it was a colossal piece of crap. Constant problems.

nynor 11-24-2009 10:40 PM

my friend had one. constant problems with the head gaskets; the bores were too tight for the pistons and it would seize after riding very far; top speed of about 45 (and it didn't seem safe long before it got to that speed). the build quality seemed, well, lax....

If you want the damn bike, buy it, don't be a wimp and blame it on the kids...:D

PORSCHE motorcycle 356 1720cc side car 2 Price: 9500.00
~356 powered motorcycle~

If you are new to this, Porsche never made a factory bike like this. Back in the late 50's and 60s, Slash 2 BMWs were purchased from dealers without engines, and conversions were done by independents. Ever see the 356 Carrera powered bike that Vasek Polak had at his BMW dealership in Hermosa Beach?

Some later models featured electric start, (Butterfield style) and most others were kick start. Modified frame with Earle's front forks. (factory paired these with side car only bikes)

Engine is a 1720cc and is a running, not installed. gearbox is modified 1:1 so you can peel the tire right off of the rim. Now sporting a .050 but old Mallory twin point is in a box. Industrial engine intakes feed the center mounted carbs. Lower pulley is genuine Carrera.

This bike is partially disassembled with the parts already in boxes. It is 'complete'.

I am not selling the Steib side car, but the bike will include side car gearing- shaft drive. Chrome, but broken Speedster tank badges are included. Porsche tank badges are also included.

You can find Speedsters, Carreras, and even the 356 powered Helicopters (Gyrodyne)...but finding one of these motorcycles? You just did.

Not a Ural, but bought this tonight as a teaching bike

Wow...surprised to hear about poor quality, reliability issues, etc. Would have expected the opposite. They've been building them since the 1940's. Built to traverse unpaved frozen Siberian tundra seemingly without end. Even have the capacity for extra fuel storage, etc. Saw one parked in our town (NE Georgia) with Quebec plates on it, and it was packed as if it had been ridden here...not trailered.

And yes...I'm a bit intrigued, if I must admit. Please don't tell my wife though. It would only be to appease the children. Yeah, that's right...the children.

If price were no object, I'd rather have an old BMW plus sidecar, than a new Russian copy of an old BMW plus sidecar.

But, the Ural does look like an entertaining way to get around town. I see one at the farmers market and it always makes me smile.

exc911ence 11-25-2009 05:05 AM

The Ural is pretty cool, the sidecar wheel is also driven so it's "two wheel drive". Great winter bike. :D

Danimal16 11-25-2009 05:21 AM

Where's the MG-34?

LakeCleElum 11-25-2009 06:15 AM

A Ural is very slow and crudely built. The National distributor used to be in Preston, WA and I saw him on a regular basis at m/c events. He often would set up a video showing the "factory". It looked like something out of pre WW II......I'd like to have a sidecar someday, but an old BMW would make a lot more sense.......

How 'bout a Dnepr 16?

From their eBay site....not very confidence inspiring;)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Other-Makes-Dnepr-16-copy-BMW-2010-Dnepr-16-2wd-w-sidecar_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45ef74b18cQQite mZ300370145676QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles

"The history of the Dnepr began in the ranks of military some 50 years ago. It was made to be agile, to be able to go places that defied the imagination and to last many years under the most unforgiving conditions. And in the years since it has proven to be a valuable asset in the military's arsenal - the unstoppable muscular breed of vehicle army had been looking for. All told, more than 1,500,000 Dneprs have been produced for the armed forces. It was only a matter of time before the Dneprs's extraordinary powers were called upon by the nonmilitary sector. KMZ's decision to sell to the public finally allowed nonmilitary personnel to experience the exceptional off-road performance and problem-solving abilities of this military-based bike.

This bike was developed for WW2 to overcome any terrain that may come in its way. In this auction the bike is the exact replica of the BMW R71. The bike was designed to 1930’s specs, so there is some mechanical knowledge bike. Please remember that you are not bidding on a 2008 motorcycle, this bike will require some maintenance and know how. It was built very simple and easy to work on. It might no always start on the first time, it might have some other issues sometimes, but this is a piece of history. You must understand the technology used to create this replica is the same as it was in the 1930’s. This bike is like no other, everybody will admire this bike on the street."

Kinda cool. Cheaply built, low maintenance. He swapped out the carbs and changed the tires, it runs great for cruising around the beach area. I wouldn't ride it to far. The sidecar wheel and rear wheel on bike turn together, kinda interesting in tight corners.

Dueller 11-25-2009 06:41 AM

Of course if you go with the olive drab military look you MUST opt for the trailer:

There is a guy here in CO that shows up in Boulder for Coffee and cars, and he has a Ural. I've never spoken to him about it, next time I will.
