1980 SAAB 900 EMS. Loved the car, was the same as the turbo without the turbo. Bun warmers with cloth seats were considered safety equipment by Saab. 28 mpg pulling a pop up camper at 70 mph through the mountains. That is one I would like to have back. Traded for a near perfect 73 Mercedes 450SE miss that car too.

I always thought the 9000 was a great looking car, especially the Aero. Absolute rocket on the highway, I think they advertised that it was faster 50-70 (highway passing) than a Ferrari Testarossa. Also did 30 MPG+. Not mine, but identical to it.
http://www.g8bmp.com/Images/Cars/H9000-09.jpg The interior was seriously cool as well, very cockpit like. Very nice Recaro seats. Inside was immense. There were many stories on Saab forums about owners hauling washing machines, refrigerators, etc in their Saab hatchbacks. I used mine for plenty of Home Depot runs, it carried 2x4 studs and PVC pipe with no trouble. |
Love the old Saab Turbos, the 99 and 900 Turbos adorned my bedroom wall of fame along with Countachs and AMG cars...my all time favorite is the 900 APC...sad to see such an incredible company fall to demise..

Had this one for 3 years. Best car I ever had. Bought it for 300 bucks, carried furniture, tools and even drove on the track/auto-X. It had 260hp as most and was dead even with 964 C2 in the straight line :) It run primarily on E85 and was a great sleeper.

Maybe they should combine with Subaru or better, Mazda, as the ranges are somewhat complimentary.

It's really a shame, as they were coming out with some of their best cars in years. They finally made the move to AWD with some models to eliminate the torque steer, which was pretty much the only thing I didn't like about my Saabs.
http://www.saabhistory.com/blog/wp-c..._incas_600.jpg I'd buy a used TurboX in a few years. Though I have to say, looking through their modern lineup I don't see anything that I would take over a comparably priced BMW. They seem to have fallen prey to the GM policy of design by committee. In trying to please everyone with their cars, they ultimately please no one. They may have been a niche maker before but they had a lot of loyalists because of that policy. Considering the move towards better MPG and more practical cars, I could see a modern Saab hatchback being popular. My '93 9000 Aero had probably 260 HP (light mods) and easily topped 30 MPG, how many modern cars offer that combination? |
