The Road by Cormac McCarthy
 

Finished it this morning, a great read. Makes you appreciate how easy we really have it here in States at this point in time. DP Lindman.

I read it a few months back... Definitely worth the time. Can't wait for the movie...

Takes place on the East Coast. Man living to save his son; no other reason.

The movie has been out for a couple weeks now. Saw it the first day. Very close to the book.

Wife's role is expanded a bit; Uma Thurman.

You will NOT recognize Robert Duvall, you can only tell it's him by his voice and mannerisms.

I bought the audio book from iTunes and enjoyed it. Would like to go see the movie.

I read The Crossing a few months back... also very good.

Can't wait for the movie.

Read "All The Pretty Horses" years back, then just recently I saw that it was a movie, with a young Matt Damon. Directed by Billy Bob Thornton.

(And the fact that No Country for Old Men was a McCarthy book was news to me until lately, too. Gotta get out more)

Give "Child of God" a read. That got me hooked on Cormac.

Just finished the Mexican trilogy.
Great writing. Great reading.

Nearing the end of Life of Pi. Yann Martel is an incredible writer. One of the best books I've read in recent memory. Incredible story...even more incredible writing.

McCarthy is a great writer!

Caught the movie on opening day as well. Very good adaptation of the novel.

I saw it at the AMC theater in Quail Springs Mall. As far as I know it is still showing there. Really strange that the release has been limited with all the Oscar buzz it has been receiving.

I wasn't sure it would play anywhere in ok. May have to come up and see it.

It isn't special effects laden so you won't miss anything by seeing it on Blu or DVD.

I've read every Cormac McCarthy book penned...his writing is as dark as a moonless night, stark.

I'm frankly surprised you guys like his writing(s). It is not for the, uh, squeamish.

Thanks for the recommends, I just finished reading it. What a great book. IMO it is worlds better than No Country for Old Men (which was good, too, but The Road is a whole new level). Like most books, I had to go back and really read and think about many of the sections to try to fully understand them. There are a lot of key sentences and paragraphs that if you miss, you miss a lot. In the many ways crappy world that we live in these days, it's lifting to enjoy an inspired work of art, and accomplishment and excellence.

It seems like a lot would get lost in making it into a movie. The book is in many ways a 250 page poem. I'd imagine the movie has a narrator? That would seem necessary.

I didn't see the movie. I think a good director could capture the flavor of the book with the right lighting, sound, and dialog. Of course, nothing the director does could match the book. But he can try.

I don't think this happened, though. The trailer shows what happened to the world, and had many scenes with the wife. That the book neglected to explain how the world got they way it was, and what happened to the wife, added to the otherworldly mystique of the book.

The trailer shows things that are not in the movie. The "event" is never described and the additional material for the wife/mother does not detract from the original material. There is very little narration so the movie may not seem complete for some viewers. Some items from the book are shortened or left out entirely. Overall I do recommend seeing the movie if you enjoyed the book.
