Self Dental work?

Anyone do their own work? Simple stuff like chips or fillings? I noticed they have a lot of excellent glues and fillers on the market that they did not have years ago. I have a small chip that is bugging me and want to fill it on a front tooth. Actually that tooth works perfect as wire strippers now!

I think I just have a dentist phobia, not that I'm cheap

JB Weld, 600 grit sandpaper and Liquid Paper.

Make sure to video it :)

In all seriousness, glues that are not specified for dental use can do damage to your enamel and cause accelerated decay.

I didnt stay at a holiday inn select but I did sleep with a dentist.

Bondo, a rasp, and Artic White in a spray gun.

cracked a molar once in the boonies..
splinted it with fine gauge wire..
the dentist a few weeks later used some type of bondo..
still have the tooth..

There was a guy on the Tonight show YEARS ago that used to do his own root canals.

Right, I saw that, the guy had done a scary amount of his own dental work.

I worked in a bar with a kitchen. One of the Hispanics in the bar had tried to pry a bad tooth out. It ended up infected and he ended up out of work for a week or two.

Some things I'll leave to the pros.

I understand the fear of dentists, but keep in mind up until the advent of modern dentistry, tooth-related problems were a major cause of death.

Me? I don't mind going to the dentist. I frequently fall asleep in the chair during a cleaning.

I used my Dremel to smooth a rough edge on a tooth. I came in to show my wife how awesome I was and she just shook her head.

The dentist we use is great, especially with the kids. We have great insurance so payment isn't a problem. I just hate making the commitment for something trivial.

Ebay has some good deals on used Cavitron units.
Years ago you could even pick up used x-ray machines, but they stopped that for some reason.

TechnoViking 03-18-2010 03:03 PM

Root canal? Not the one I had. My dentist referred me to a specialist 'cause even he couldn't do it.

Might as well perform your own appendectomy.

Reminds me of the story a reconstructive plastic surgeon friend told me. Was about a senorita who performed a c-section on herself using nothing but a bottle of tequila, a shard of glass, and a needle and thread.

m21sniper 03-18-2010 03:13 PM

Did it work?

ramonesfreak 03-18-2010 04:06 PM

a friend of mine had some rotten teeth and on at least one occasion, pried out the rotten tooth at the root with a butter knife...it didnt look like much fun

Rick V 03-18-2010 04:19 PM

Dude, I am not a fan of the dentist myself, but I just had 3 root canals 2 posts and 1 crown. It isn't like it was even 10 years ago.

A little search shows, that yeah, it did...but apparently the glass was a 6" knife, and some of the details vary:

That is one TOUGH lady.

Once, while stranded on a deserted isle, I removed a bad tooth with an ice skate - as my assistant ' Wilson ' watched (and cringed).

My best friend from college is a dentist. She's a smoking hot Asian girl too. On a recent visit (in the Bay Area), I asked her to take a look at a tooth my dentist in Phoenix said needed a crown. I hate my dentist. We were at her house and she didn't have any tools there. So I got my Surefire out of my bike's tank bag. It was kind of funny to watch her jealous fiance watch her straddle me on ther couch and poke around my mouth with my flashlight. My wife and I went to their wedding two weeks ago and she took at a look at my wife's aching tooth in the hotel after the reception. Looked kind of funny to see her in her bridal gown using a cop's (wedding guest) flashlight to look around her mouth. A true professional.
