You know your stuff. :)

All I can add is if you're considering a used watch you need to educate yourself first.
Decide what brand you want and start reading. There are lots of good watch sites on the web that have heaps of info.

I've always liked "Rolex" because they do everything in house and they are beautiful classic watches.

Pre Tag "Heuer" are great watches but difficult to find in good condition without spending big bucks.

"Tag Heuer" like my daily shown earlier are OK but these are not as good as the original "Heuer".
A lot of the components are outsourced in Switzerland to specialist companies that make only watch crystals for instance.

Do your home work and enjoy. If you educate yourself you"ll be able to avoid being taken.

Think of it this way. When you buy a car do you not research the car before hand?
Do you not know which are good dealerships and which are not?
It's the same with watches.

Idiots and watches? That's the pairing that comes to mind when I see people going on about expensive baubles to wear on their arms to impress each other.

Some people think the same about people who drive fancy sports cars. ;)

That was certainly true when they were new. Decades later, it's the rare watches that command the most money. Go price an early Milgauss. Heck, when I bought my Daytona in the early 80's, dealers couldn't give them away. Now, they are worth 10-20 times what they sold for new. Some of the quartz movement Rolexes are worth a pile. A large pile...

Stuart

That may be partly true but this watch was certified as accurate like all Rolex watches.
It was probably the most expensive quartz movement ever developed.

That may be true, but is it more accurate than a brand new casio or timex quartz?

I just can't imagine the desire to have an EXPENSIVE quartz Rolex. I understand the desire for a nice manual or automatic watch, but for quartz? I guess I understand a nice dressy quartz watch, but the price of a quartz (in my mind) should be much less than a comparable mechanical.

Elephants and Seikos....they both come in quarts....

Thats true- and quartz has its place. But the ubuiq..ubuyotous ....common Seiko mechanical diver is still best value real watch around- made by a maufacturer that genuinely makes does everything in their watches, down to the luminox. Its a tool, like a Rolex used to be before it became an aspirational "brand".

And have you ever seen a Japan only Grand Seiko? As fine as anything from Switzerland.

Seiko's are nice watches. I like Seikos, but they aren't usually in the same price range as a Rolex or Omega.

LOL, I opened up this thread expecting it to be about people who are willing to pay crazy money for a silly watch, but I was wrong ;)

HHI944 04-27-2010 08:35 AM

I have a seiko, it's a great watch, I'm just looking for something a little dressier.
An acquiantance recently snagged a his and hers set of datejusts of craigslist for 2k. I'm kicking myself for not finding those first.

Some of us do not wear them to impress anyone. I wear mine because I enjoy them and frankly, I deserve them.

Bought my first, a steel and gold GMT Master in the 1970's in the PX. Several others have followed including my Fathers President.

Nothing like a Rolex. You guys want something else then go for it but there is no reason to knock the brand.

I paid $300 or so for my first GMT Master in the PX and its been valued at well over $5000 recently. Guess its a good investment and you know what, it still keeps good time! Wore it all last week and enjoyed it.

I can't post a picture of my watch because it is also my camera, phone, mp3 player, digital picture storage thingy.
I haven't had a watch for many years, probably speaks for my level of sophistication. Oh well, i like budweiser and captain crunch cereal also.

widgeon13 04-27-2010 10:05 AM

I agree, buy new and the servicing is not necessary.

</div>Yeah, but there's no free lunch in life. My experience has been that independent service centers and local watchmakers do a lousy job of servicing a watch. Your experience may differ but mine's 100% bad when using anybody other than Rolex. It's worth it to me.<br>
<br>
Having said that, I usually buy new watches. I only buy used when I am looking for a particular watch that is no longer available new. My experience has been that if you buy new, after around 10 years the watch will be worth more than the original purchase price, for a stainless steel sports model. Gold watches are a different story.<br>

I never gave a crap about watches except for the Tag Heuer Steve McQueen wore. Would love to get one of those one day.

My father bought me a Heuer when I graduated from Prep School, before they were with TAG. I still wear it all the time.

I wonder what watch he wore when filming Bullitt?

Same here minus the "Budweiser". My last watch was a gift from my wife, a Citizen Blue Angels about 15 years ago. It quit working several years ago so it sits. Computers, auto dash clocks and cell phones have pretty much eliminated my need for a watch anymore. There is really no time in my average day that one of these is not a glance away.

You know you can get a really purty counterfeit watch for about $50.00 if you just want to snazz yourself up.

I'm with Tim and Biv.
