266 makes it faster than a Bugatti Veyron. It makes it faster than ANY current production car.

The fact that it can do it in a standing mile is mind-blowing.

The fact that it can do with without all-wheel drive, special tires, or the active aero the Bugatti has borders on not believable. It took the Bugatti people years of expensive engineering to wring 250 mph (which it takes OVER a mile to get up to) out of a car, and someone else without the engineering budget manages to beat them simply by putting a ridiculously huge engine in a Ford GT!

"dwarfs on the shoulders of giants"

Ah, but the Veyron has been developed enough to be civilized enough to use as a daily driver, something I doubt this GT could do.

It is mind blowing. Apparently the same car went 252 in Texas in a standing mile. THey dialed up the boost for the 266 run. Still, almost 2000hp is nearly double the Veyron. I wonder what tires they use. I can't imagine that they are your average Bridgestone Potenza, even if it is an RE-11.

I'd think with the cars that are capable of over 200mph, 225, or even 250, the tire manuf would have to start making some new tires that won't fall aparts at those speeds.

According to C&D

Quote:

For street use, the GT1000TT wears a set of fat Pirellis—front 255/30ZR-20 P Zeros and rear 335/25ZR-22 P Zero Scorpions. For the speed runs, Heffner bolted on a set of sticky Hoosier A6 autocross tires—245/40ZR-18 in front, 315/40ZR-19 at the rear. With drag racer Gary Javo from Savannah, Georgia, at the helm, the GT clocked the quarter-mile in 10.6 seconds at 152 mph and hit 200 mph in 18.9 seconds.

Combined with a set of Ford Racing brake rotors, the Hoosiers also paid off in the test’s shortest stop: 200 to 0 in 1089 feet, which in turn added up to the best 0-to-200-to-0 result: 4642 feet in 26.5 seconds.

Considering its face-distorting thrust, the Heffner GT is remarkably docile on the street. A set of Eibach springs and Penske adjustable shocks raise the roll stiffness, but the ride quality is civilized nonetheless, the clutch is agreeable, and drivability is of the everyday variety. Owner Ray Hoffman, a Texan who had barely taken delivery of the finished car by test time, called it "a sweetheart."

Sounds like the perfect car. :D

It's easily a daily driver. I have an acquaintance with a Heffner massaged twin-turbo GT (although not 1900hp) and it is pretty docile when you're not mashing the loud pedal.

Even at Indianapolis that's pretty much impossible. 266 exceeds human reaction time. This is why every racing series that does ovals has some means for slowing the cars down.

m21sniper 04-27-2010 11:52 AM

What? Fighter jets in dog fights can exceed 5 or 600 or even 700 mph at times. And well in excess of 1000mph in a merge.

Actually, the engine is only 5.4L, not even a 350. Definitely not ridiculously huge. Just some huge turbos putting out close to 3bar (41psi) of boost.

$40-50k on top of the price of the GT. I think the GT was supposed to have been ~$135k when it came out, but I suspect that it went for more than list price. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.

I think the problem is that it's not set up for the forces that a banked oval at 250mph would supply. Not to mention, didn't some CART guys drive on a big oval in Dallas and start blacking out because of the G-forces involved.

I think cars in a roundy round are on a smaller scale. Up in the air, you've got less stuff to run into. Also, those guys have G-Suits to keep the blood distributed.

Wow! That's a lot of car for the price!

Paul is correct: never underestimate what American manufacturers can do to cars (when not bridled by accountants).
