Jacques Cousteau on TCM
 

Jacques Cousteau on TCM tonight, I have always loved that show.

Tried watching some earlier today on cable and the video/sound kept freezing up like a scratched dvd...

mine did that some too, hmmmm

I loved Jacques Cousteau when I was a kid. I remember building a model of the Calypso when I was 7-8.

In the late 70's I was on the French Canadian navy ship Skeena in Halifax when the Calypso pulled in. After having to crew on board for a drink or two... we got invited for dinner on their ship. It was unbelievably small compare to the way you see it on TV. It's like the Alamo, look big in the movie but every body leaving the Fort comment on the size.

If any body is interested, I got the 20 books collection of his adventure for sale. Of course it's in French:D:D:D

I too grew up watching Jacques Cousteau, good stuff...

that damn jacques forced me to buy gazzillions of dollars of diving gear and unterwater cameras. damn him. 34 years later im still doing it.



calypso is being refurbed for 100yr b-day aniversary of jacques. sank due to accident i think in hong kong harbor and towed back to france.



been watching it also. the easter island episode was great.



would give my left and right huevos to crew with them and go diving.

Fond memories of being a kid and lying on the living room floor watching his show with the whole family.

Same with the wonderful world of Disney.

Sad how TV sucks nowadays.

i was GLUED to jacques. at 17 got certified and have been doing it since. he had the COOLEST JOB on the planet.

the special for his 75th B-day was incredible..
that man is amazing..
shows and explained the how come and why..
he wanted to be a pilot..a crash and the rehab (ocean)..
gave us the aqua-lung and so much more..

Yes! J.C was my childhood hero. I wanted his job when I grew up. Never happened of course. I am too stupid and too afraid of sea dwelling monsters.

I watched a couple of episodes yesterday. Talk about a flash from the past. I loved watching his specials when I was a kid.

I remember when I went on my first open water dive.... I think it was at the Chesapeake Bay light... (if I remember correctly) I used to pass that thing on what seemed like a weekly basis as a mariner and then I was diving it... think I was 21 at the time and it was a very J.C. moment for me... I went with a SSI certification at the time, but am thinking of going back and getting a PADI certification as I have since lost my SSI card and all of my dive gear has been stolen....

Interesting thing about Cousteau is that he wasn't/isn't held in high regard by oceanographers. When he visited SIO his arrogance and demanding demeanor caused him to be considered a royal PITA, but due to his public image and the fact that SIO isn't a private institution, he had to be coddled and catered to, much to the dismay of the scientists, tech.s and administration.

The oceanographers were peeved that, while he did bring an appreciation of the oceans to the public, he focused on topics and issues that they considered detracted from much more important topics and issues that they were devoted to studying, i.e., he put showmanship and profit over furthering the understanding and appreciation of the importance of oceanography.

I think it's interesting that neither Marlin Perkins nor Carl Sagan were percieved by their peers in that way.

Just trying to be funny... I really don't think his nationality had anything to do with it.... I would think that it is simply a matter of egos... try telling your doctor what you think is wrong with you someday lol....;)

As for egos, that didn't seem to me to apply to the oceanographers I knew back then. As for a patient telling a doctor, umm, more like an orthopedist telling a chiropractor. :)
