Dear Playboy Advisor

When I 'read' playboy I used to see questions like this in the adviser column so I'll ask the 'brain trust' this:

Is it okay to NOT wear an undershirt with a dress shirt? I honestly don't know which is considered 'correct' of if there even is a 'correct' in this question.

I wear an undershirt sometimes and sometimes I don't - if it is more formal (for example an interview) I wear one - usually. If it is every day normal however I don't - usually (today I am).

So - generally if I have a tie on - I wear one if I don't - I might not.

We noticed.

Yes, you can omit the undershirt. In fact, unless you sweat more than average, I see no point at all to the undershirt.

And, this is more of a GQ question.

I never wear undershirts, but I do wear ties..

racer 07-27-2010 03:45 PM

No.. it is not ok. Ever. Wife Beater T's are not ok either ;)

jriera 07-27-2010 03:47 PM

I will never, ever, wear an undershirt under a dress shirt ... tie or no tie ...

Maybe is my European side ...

I believe the law states that if you wear a T shirt under a dress shirt you have to move to Texas.

I always wear an undershirt. I only wear a white one when wearing a white shirt as color would show through and that would be ridiculous. Complimentary color undershirts work for me and the wife digs the look. You can get any color you want in Haynes at AC Moore $10 for 4.

PS: printed tees never work as undersirts.

This is a stupid question. If it's -30 out it is ok to wear as many of whatever is necessary.

I've never been in or out of -30 degrees.

Ever.

Really? Texas? Are we talking Corpus Christi or El Paso?

I always wear an undershirt under a dress shirt. I like the way it feels better...makes the dress shirt "lay" better as well. Also helps if you sweat, I suppose, or makes you sweat a little. I'm unsure which causes which. :) What I don't understand is the wife beater. If you sweat, I suspect it's more the pits sweating than the body and the wife beater has to arms, so what's the point? I'm pretty hairy, so even if I didn't wear it for comfort, sweat, etc. I would wear one since I don't want that showing through. :)

Printed t-shirts underneath only if you're on travel and did a lame job packing.

I have. I was in Hancock, MI one February, 1996-97 perhaps. It was so cold you had to yell because your words would freeze before anybody heard 'em if you dint. It was so cold the lawyers had their hands in their own pockets it was so cold. How cold was it? It was so cold you put your coffee in the freezer to warm it up. Serious, serious cold. When I travel up there in the winter I carry two or three deer hides in the car. Just going from the car to a building required physical and mental preparation and determination. At night w/ a moon there were billions and billions of almost microscopic ice crystals in the air just floating. Very eery and hypnotic. Dangerous, painful cold.

Must be Houston, because I am wearing an undershirt under my workshirt right now.

KaptKaos 07-27-2010 04:27 PM

The purpose for underwear is to protect the outerwear, much like sheets on a bed.

It also protects the rest of us from some rather uncomfortable moments.

So when wearing a dress shirt, wear a T-shirt. If you're wearing it casually, like at the beach with shorts, then who cares, but at work or a more formal function, rock the T-shirt.

Oh, wife beaters are only worn if you're going to be on Cops.

craigster59 07-27-2010 04:38 PM

I usually just like to rock the "light and breezy" look...

This all so confusing! Now I'm not sure what to do, and it also begs the question if I should be wearing undershorts under my slacks and suit pants.
