Beach Boys

On a Beach Boys kick lately.

Some of their stuff is SO great... perfect even. There was a "sweet spot" after which they should never have recorded anything, and NEVER should have performed live again.

I can't help but wonder if fate had intended for them all to be killed in a plane wreck in the early 70's.

Surely to heavens they didn't deserve this fate:

noteworthy:
- Dennis Wiilson looks an awful lot like Charlie Manson
- Mike Love is *really* obnoxious (although I've seen him worse)
- Brian Wilson, cripes, just breaks your heart. Looks scared
- disco & beach boys do not mix

The Beach Boys story

Talk about a cautionary tale.

(But you know, some of the songs that they gave us must have been channeled through benevolent aliens.)

I am a big fan, but IMHO, the Beach Boys ceased to exist sometime in the 60's.

Charles Manson and his clan actually lived with Dennis Wilson for a while.
Mike Love IS obnoxious.
Brian Wilson is a musical genius, but the poor guy suffers from a number of mental/emotional ailments.
Disco & Beach Boys should not even be mentioned in the same sentence!

I always imagined Carl being the "glue"... seemed like the sane one, the eye of the storm. Must have been tough; it was a long, painful spiral

My wife doesn't care for their music so they don't get a lot of air time at our house but I don't mind an dose of them on occassion.

I've been listening to 'Heroes and Villans' a lot this past week. No idea why.

I think there are 3 groups touring & singing Beach Boys songs, though only one member (Love, I think) has the rights to use the name.

Pet Sounds is one of the great albums ever. No need to judge them based on how they ended up. Some people get better with age, most get worse. The fact is that they created some of the most original and beautiful "rock" ever. Thankfully we have recordings...

Been a fan since high school. They would play at Six Flags Over Georgia in the summer. My friends and I would go buy tickets to the park and go straight to the concert area so we could sit on the front row.

I have so many memories tied to different Beach Boys songs. I still get chills when I hear the first notes of Surf's Up and Good Vibrations.

The only Beach Boys song I ever listen to is Kokomo. I remember hearing it in the movie Cocktail..

the other stuff... not my bag.

Lets put it this way:

Old beach boys music reminds me of.... being old, and white. Just, really white.

:)

Sloop John B - best song they ever wrote IMO

Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09dQmeB_NgU

and then there is Reliant K's version which features the original lyrics - not bad, in fact they have some chops!

Mike I hate to tell you... Even with the insane amount of MGD and malt liquor you consume you are still really white.... and some day you will be old... So get used to it! :D

Lubey, Sloop John B is probably my favorite to hear by them, too. They made it their own.

Jake, Vibrations was, I'm sure, one of their most difficult songs to pull off live. Combine that with perhaps bad acoustics in that TV studio, and it would be almost impossible.

Those guys were craftsmen... those incredible layered harmonies are completely unique in all of popular music. Brian put all that stuff together and it's sheer genius... and nobody can take it from him. Nor should his decline tarnish what he accomplished.

Those of you here who were a kid growing up in the sixties knows what I mean when I say they captured the romance of the automobile and the feel of the West Coast lifestyle with all their tributes to surfing, etc. and shared it with everybody who couldn't be there.

Like a lot of people, my musical tastes changed and matured as the end of sixties approached and we all moved on to Hendrix, Zeppelin, Santana, Canned Heat, James Gang, and a thousand other bands, but every once in awhile, it's good to put on some Beach Boys and turn it up to eleven. It's incredible stuff.

Another great job on a cover... turn it wayyyyy up:

Saw them back in 77 at the Omni in Atlanta when I was a Sr in high school. It was a good time. Always liked them and still do.

There's a new hospital opening up here and they are having a big party to celebrate. The Beach Boys are to play and we are going.

jcommin 09-29-2010 03:46 AM

+1 for Pet Sounds. The Beach boys did not write Sloop John B.

widgeon13 09-29-2010 05:18 AM

Always loved the Beach Boys but.............

I went to see the Temptations the other night, same feeling, very sad. We're all getting older and there ain't a ****ing thing we can do about it.

But the music does bring back great memories and that's part of growing older, having many great memories to cherish.

Jake,
Beach Boys played in Moncton,NB, this summer at the new casino. Drove up with the bride for the night. Good show with lots of color and character, although Mike Love was obviously conserving his energy. Seemed to be a show attended by "your granparents"...lots of grey hair...but then I've been going to Beach Boys shows since the early sixties....so likely fit the demographics ! Bruce Johnston and Mike Love were the real stars, but guitar work and arrangements by the new group were stellar. A great concert.

Brian Wilson USED TO BE a musical genius. Now he's a zucchini.

He tried to perform at an elton John tribute about 6 or 7 years ago that my wife drug me to. Brian was supposed to sing one of Elton's songs, with elton's band as back up.
Well evidently the veg-head couldn't remember the words (don't let the sun go down on me, pretty hard song) so he had a guy stand in front of him with the music so broccoli could sing along.
But he couldn't read either and messed it all up, he stopped trying half way through the song and someone helped him off the stage.
It was truly pathetic.

I love the beach buys music and have several of their CDs so it kind of makes me angry that he fried his brain and killed it all.
