New Coffee Maker thread

Have done the french press, also standard Braun both make a decent cup. Looking for something new after leaving the Braun full of coffee while away to find it filled with mold this morning. Have a gift card to Williams Sonoma and found this contraption

Technivorm Moccamaster KB-741
Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee Maker with Glass Carafe | Williams-Sonoma

Wouldn't normally spend that much on a maker, but the card makes it palatable.

Anything else out there worth considering?

Sounds great, but unless you want something to grind the beans for you, it is hard to beat simple and cheap!

You want a super-automatic. It will do regular coffee. It will do espresso. A fresh cup every time from grinding the beans, etc.

I picked up mine from wholelattelove.com for $599. Look at the refurbished page.

1990C4S 10-06-2010 09:18 AM

I have the bean grinder built in. I think it's the best thing.

Danimal16 10-06-2010 09:32 AM

Shaun,

I got rid of my electric stuff and went to a french press. I am very happy with it.

BGCarrera32 10-06-2010 09:43 AM

Hmmm...I have one of these in very good condition (Gaggia espresso machine)

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1286383313.gif

And would be willing to trade for a Carrera lid and tail... SmileWavy
They're about 5 bills on eBay.

Tobra 10-06-2010 09:48 AM

You could always clean the one you have and spend the money you save on car parts. Bleach is just the ticket for mold.

Rich76_911s 10-06-2010 09:50 AM

I'm really happy with our kuerig. It will take out that issue with leaving the pot full and ending up with mold.

Hi Dan, haven't seen you in ages, hope you are well. I may just go back to a french press.

I would do the bleach but my health has been in steady decline (ROI of 80+ hour weeks) so I'm more inclined to start fresh. With my luck I'd have some crazy mutant flesh eating mold survive the bleach.

hi Rich! aren't these the machines that use individual containers? If so, one of my things is wasteful packaging so can't go there.

Thanks all for the ideas, keep em coming.

Rich76_911s 10-06-2010 10:46 AM

Hey Shaun,

Yeah that is the wasteful machine. You can do your own coffee and not waste with it as well. Though I have to admit I haven't quite perfected the art of a GREAT cup of coffee made with my own ground beans yet. The packaged stuff is better than I have done.

BGCarrera32 10-06-2010 11:04 AM

Wow you ended up doing much better on the tail!

murphyjp 10-06-2010 01:27 PM

Simple, Keurig. It also comes with a small assembly to allow you to use regular coffee. As far as packaging, I've found if you order from Amazon they use reduced packaging techniques, but you still have the small individual containers.

Cuisinart Grind & Brew

Got mine for $10 at a garage sale....they thought it was broken, it was just jammed with coffee dust.

RWebb 10-06-2010 02:29 PM

I'm very disapointed Shaun. When I saw the terms " New Coffee Maker" and that you had already done the "french press" I naturally assumed you had a new gf and were posting some exciting pics to share with us all.

gtc 10-06-2010 02:37 PM

Wow...
If you want to use that method, skip the Technivorm thing and get a couple of Hario V60s and a Zojirushi digital water boiler/dispenser (also very handy for use with a french press).

Heel n Toe 10-06-2010 02:49 PM

We were gifted something that looks sorta like this (that's a Cuisinart... ours is a Mr. Coffee and doesn't grind) a few years ago, and we have a couple of complaints.

1. The metal carafe; it sucks not to be able to see how much coffee is left so you can leave more in it for the next person if you're near empty. We're looking forward to when it dies so we can get anything with a glass carafe. Haven't looked into whether there's an aftermarket carafe available in glass that fits it.

2. It doesn't have a heat plate to keep the coffee hot. The instructions say that you should run some hot water into the carafe from the sink and let it sit 5 mins., then pour it out, then brew coffee into it. Preheating, in effect. It is a double-walled carafe, so I understand how that heats the inside layer and space between the two layers and keeps the coffee hot longer.

I guess that's frou frou and coffee connoisseurs aren't supposed to brew coffee and leave it sitting on a hot plate... I guess we just want our coffee to stay hot even if it means it sits there awhile.

Just give us our caveman coffee and we're happy. Heh heh.

Danimal16 10-06-2010 03:14 PM

Shaun,

Things are well on this end. It was a rough spell there for awhile but life is looking up. Got the front suspension out of the 71 and a new engine being built. Finally time to use the French Press and work on cars, life is good.

Saeco here also. Spoiled me, I can't drink coffee out anymore, fresh ground tastes so much better at home.

We should have a thread like this every month. I love reading this stuff while drinking a fresh cup of coffee. :)

Weekdays we use a Melitta/ Mr Coffee as in post #2. Weekends are for the french press. (lol Webb!)

So, if one chooses to use a FP, what is the ideal water temp?

I've gone thru 3 makers and several brands and almost anyone can make better coffee than me. Right now I'm brewing Don Francisco Hazelnut, but I'm not impressed. And I keep the damn things clean so as to not get bitter coffee.

It still tastes like swill. Maybe I should change the water I'm using which is tap water. The thing is, out tap water is rated good and tastes exactly like Crystal Geyser.

Seriously, you can't tell the difference.

However, I hear there's some new fangled chlorine compound being used. Maybe that combines with the coffee and messes it up. I don't see anything at the Star$s other than an inline filter.

Shaun @ Tru6 10-08-2010 03:03 PM

Sometimes growing up in rural CT blows. I put the whole thing in the dishwasher with the high heat pots & pans soak mode and sani-rinse option.

came out like new. :(

Per Alton Brown on food network "Just off the boil", I use a Brita filtered water, SS teapot on gas stove, bring it to a boil, turn the fire off for ten or fifteen seconds, then pour into FP

Dude, Dan Francisco!?! Get thee to a Trader Joe's and buy some whole bean Costa Rican, the stop by Target and get a coffee grinder, preferable not a spice grinder... get something you pour the beans in one end and they come out grounds the other.

Enjoy!

PS, I use tap water and paper filters at work with the fresh ground beans and it turns out ok... I also make my coffee triple strength... wife calls it "rocket fuel"... co workers love it "once you have had Scotties coffee you can't go back"... but they have to cut it with water. When I vacationed with my parents they were mortified that I drank what looked like motor oil.

-I let my water cool off a bit, until it's down to maybe 195-200 F.
-Use a very coarse grind. Coarser than drip coffee. If you only have drip grind coffee, shorten the brew time by a little bit.
-I use a heaping tablespoon of grounds per cup brewed. When in doubt, more is better, since you can dilute it later with leftover hot water.
-Pour in hot water, stir the grounds to moisten them, set the handle on top of the carafe, and let them sit for three minutes.
-Press down slowly to avoid pushing grounds past the screen.

We have a Braun filter machine, a very complicated Saeco, and a French press.

And lately we've been drinking instant. Anyone try this Davidoff stuff? I think it's brilliant.

Atomic.
Of course, the machines only last 60 years or so.......

We have one of those Keurig brewers.
I really like it and we use our own coffee in the little strainer basket assembly that you can buy as an extra. Works well with fine ground coffee. I compact the coffee a bit before putting the cap on for brewing.
We also used one of those Jura automatics when we were staying in Grand Cayman. Makes excellent coffee. We never ventured out for a coffee while we were there.

onewhippedpuppy 10-09-2010 06:41 AM

Legitimate question: for good old plain coffee, how are these fancy machines better than my Bunn and grinder?

RWebb 10-09-2010 01:24 PM

any paper filter (Bunn??) will absorb some of the oils and they will not show up in your cup -- can be good or bad, up to your taste buds

the grind has to be exact for the high end "whatever you're having" and cannot heat the coffee up - IIRC, the cheapest ones my coffee shop will sell is a $300 burr grinder

personally, I let the pros do it at my fav. coffee shop - they are also very cute & young (coeds) so that helps too

I used a Bunn for many many years. The Primary advantage of the Super-Automatic is that it produces a completely fresh cup of coffee on demand. It also makes espresso.

While I would say it is GOOD looking I would not say it is CLEAN looking. In fact it looks way more complicated than a normal coffe maker. More like a rocket sitting on a gantry. Techy. Cool. But not clean.

But what do I know? I still use my grandmother's old perculator. Now THAT's clean looking.;)
