This is my daily driver. '73 Superbeetle, 2270 Type 4, 901 5 speed, 944 brakes, rear torsion bars, and seats, 951 trailing arms, 996 wheels, 911/914/912E gauges, and a bunch of other stuff.

I couldn't afford the 911 I wanted, so I built the closest thing I could. All contrary to the ad slogan, of course.

Yetibone, Cool fatchick!
My wifes '67 will be fairly similar in the engine and tranny department.

pavulon 10-10-2010 07:44 AM

AFAIK, still for sale locally and definitely original miles...wanted something like $40K 2-3 yrs ago.

Problem with that car is all the rubber parts will self destruct as soon as you start driving it. Tires, hoses, tranny mounts, seals will all need replacing in short order, the horse hair seat padding will turn to dust, if improperly stored the cylinders could be rusted as well as the body, etc.
Not to mention that car has a bunch of incorrect parts on it and it's a post- '67. To me $40k is crackhead money.

I had a super low mile bug come into my shop, it blew out the oil cooler seals when they tried to start it because the pressure relief valve was stuck. I did repairs on the engine and told him about the above items and the dude was flipping because "it's a low mile car". I said fine, pay me for work done and GTFO. About a week later I saw the car in the auto trader for less than he bought it for saying it needed new tires...it still needed a lot more than just tires.

The only things I see that are incorrect are the steering wheel and the flaired tail pipe tips.
Pretty cool pictures and stories so far. Keep em coming.

pavulon 10-10-2010 09:26 AM

Wheel and tips (and some other "incorrect" parts) seem to have been dealer installed.

Thats pretty cool Scott! I stand corrected.

Hi Dan!! A local hoarder (on a commercial scale...mostly recycleables in about 50-100 18-wheeler trailers trying to time that market) was willed the car from a local small time hoarder...or at least that's the story he told me. I was interested in the car until he quoted me that price. I feel that price is so far from reality that it isn't worth trying to negotiate.

Mark Henry 10-10-2010 10:26 AM

That's cool...but dealer installed isn't factory. Lots of the stock perverts, the guys who would be the only ones interested in this car, will say the same thing.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car, I'm just stating the pitfalls of a low mileage car like this.SmileWavy

pavulon 10-10-2010 10:42 AM

Yeah...I know the type of person you're referencing. A guy I know has to maturbate to the Chevy parts catalog. He's like the Camaro part number Rain Man. Real nice guy but...well that's a lot of energy up in smoke.

Anyway, it's not my car and is what it has been since May 1969...wish I could say the same.

I enjoyed p!$$!n& the SBO! purists off when their admn. found out my car was a Sportbug.

Ooooo! My car was yellow, had different seats, Marathon wheels, and a sporty steering wheel.

Ooooooo!!!

I see Syncroid is in Puerto Rico, the new home of my departed 914 race car which is resting now in the Volkyland museum. I am curious if you have been there and is it as nice as the website looks? That is a huge collection for sure!

Amen brother.
If I had to stick with an anemic 50hp engine I wouldn't be into bugs.
Plus I love the look on a dudes face when he gets smoked by a little bug.;)
