Well, I'm Oficially Out Of The Closet...

My inner lesbian took over and I picked up an '05 Subaru Outback 3.0 L.L. Bean Edition. 58k on the clock, bought new and maintained at the dealership I bought it from and super clean.

My A3 had 165k miles, was due for around $4k in maintainance stuff (timing belt, control arms, turbo issues, etc.) and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. $17,000 for the car and gave me $8,000 on the trade in.

They had an "05 with the 2.5 turbo, but after comparing it to the 3.0 there wasn't much difference. The 3.0 had less miles, .5 seconds slower 0-60 but no chance of the issues the '05 turbos are known for. I had also been looking at 4Runners but the 4wd are scarce and didn't want to jump into a V8 if gas shoots up too high.

Oh, and the beauty is I just rented it to an AT&T commercial for 2 days at $450 a day as a "picture car" (family unloading camping gear in a campground). That'll make the first 3 payments!

Would that be a commercial with an "alternative" family? I couldn't resist.

I had a Legacy GT, basically a lowered Outback for straight people that don't own Golden Retrievers. It was a really good car, you chose well.

You are supposed to run Premium but a lot of people run 89. They picked the car this morning with a trailer and will drop off a rental car this afternoon. Hopefully I won't be watching the Superbowl and see an ad for AT&T with someone high-speed "drifting" an Outback on a dirt road!

Let me know what you think of it, once you've had some time behind the wheel. I currently drive an '03 Limited with a 4 cylinder and an automatic transmission, that I hate with a passion due to lack of pickup. It's pretty sad when the wife's mini van puts your car to shame in the performance dept.

I've been looking at other AWD options and nothing seems to top the Subie in terms of bang for your buck. I've come to the same conclusion about the 3 liter vs the turbo, but would appreciate some real world feedback.

the local mechanic who is supposed to be the expert on these said, he likes the older ones better as they are more "direct" better feel etc.

I suspect it is the same thing as on the e-gas of the early Porsche water-cooled models.

anyway, congrats on getting one "with all the trimmings" - I have a 4 cyl. beater, winter car and tho boring, I can't find another wagon with that much gnd. clearance; much less for as low a price of ownership.

is it possible to get a 3.0 with a manual? I think that's what I dislike most about my current one. Prior to the '03, I had a bare bones '98 w/ 5 speed that I loved.
