Ak 47 vs Ar15

Sold my Ar 15, missing it was going to buy a Ak, dunno some people say the Ar is better .... what say the brain trust, there are so many guns , so little time!:)

Rick Lee 12-14-2010 09:50 PM

If you want a quality AK, get a Lancaster. Made in the USA and all quality parts and workmanship. If you want a cheapo beater, get a Romanian WASR. They're well under $400 now.

HardDrive 12-14-2010 09:56 PM

I have a Norinco MAK-90 AK variant. Its fun for making a lot of noise and making the mud fly. But its not the most accurate gun in the world. Not by a long shot.

If you have any thoughts of taking it to a range and target shooting, then you should get an AR. If you just want to blast off cheap ammo and cause mayhem, get an AK.

tabs 12-15-2010 02:08 AM

The Arsenal made in Las Vegas Milled Receivers are da bomb in AK's

The Knights SR15 is da bomb in AR's

But me thinks the Knights SR25 MK II in 308, with 20 inch barrel suppressed is the way to fly.

sc_rufctr 12-15-2010 02:19 AM

The most asked question ever...

Sell something and get both so you'll know, side by side which one YOU think is the best.

For me?... AR15 any day of the week. With a nice rail and some "accessories" you can't got wrong.

The AK is a rough piece of crap that somehow send lots of rounds down range. Good luck hitting anything ;)

Were are you flying to? Africa??? :D

Sounds like something you'd use to poach elephants!

I personally love my Colt Sporter II AR-15. I enjoy reloading .223 ammo for it and I would not want an AK, even if one was given to me. That's just my personal opinion from a Desert Storm vet who's used AR-15's (M16A1 and A2's) since 1982...

on2wheels52 12-15-2010 04:47 AM

I thought everyone has both.

I have both.
I like both, but they are very different approaches to the combat rifle.

IMO, it is not proper to compare them as they were made for different users in different conditions, and with different criteria.

Jeff Higgins 12-15-2010 06:31 AM

None of the above.

Any plain old .30-30 lever gun will out shoot either, and be one hell of a lot more useful. And fun. Get a brand new Marlin 336 for half of what you would pay even for a bottom end POS AR15, or hit the shows for a used one for even less. Winchester '94s are pretty nice, too, if you find the right one.

I have to disagree with you Jeff on your lever vs AR comment. I like lots of different types of guns and own a Marlin lever in .44 mag, but for a "combat weapon", an AR-15 semi auto with several 30 round mags is going to trump a lever gun every time. If I was in a foxhole facing multiple advancing enemy forces, I would choose my AR every time over any lever gun and I bet you would too Jeff.

Oh, absolutely agreed, Tim. I don't see myself in that predicament anytime soon, but if I were ever unfortunate to find myself there, I can think of a lot of guns I would prefer over a lever gun. Like some sort of .50 BMG or something...;)

I just can't help myself - every time I see anything about these new fangled "black guns", I feel I have to interject a more traditional perspective. In all seriousness, I think for a guy who doesn't own many guns, or who has to choose between the two, the lever gun is the better choice for us civilians. Now, if one can have both, all the better...

In civilian life for defense, there is no need for a AR or AK or FAL or HK etc. I am perfectly content with a 5 shot snubbie and a .30-30 because they do all that is needed perfectly well.

When I hunt, it is not combat. I need only to place one shot correctly and no combat rifle is ever needed.

When I am in combat, I would wish for something more accurate that a AK and something with more penetration than a AR. In combat, most of your targets actually know something about cover and concealment and are not waiting for you to shoot them as they run toward you in the open.

vash 12-15-2010 10:05 AM

none of the above. for my "end of days" rifle, i would like a .308.

socom 16 or some HK rig.

Tim Hancock 12-15-2010 10:15 AM

The OP asked which was better an AR or an AK. He did not ask whether we think he "needs" one. He does apparently want one. I wanted one also several years ago even though I do not really "need" it. Same holds true for "most" of my gun collection.

I think I am violating California law just by reading this thread.

What's it like to actually have the option of buying an AK or an AR?

vash 12-15-2010 10:17 AM

between the two..AR platform. infinintely mod-able.

Ak 47 vs Ar15

How about an AR in .308 (AR10)?

Freedom? I've already reported Vash to the authorities for expressing an opinion on ASSAULT guns. That should get me enough credits to offset the demerits I received for reading this thread.

porsche4life 12-15-2010 11:24 AM

Having shot both, I would say AR. The AK is very good at firing lots of rounds.... But like they said, good luck hitting anything...

Same rings true for the VZ58.....

My roommate had a really odd gun collection. 2 ARs, a VZ58, Ak, Dragunov, and a whole mess of Mosins....

MotoSook 12-15-2010 11:38 AM

Cliff,

How about a rig that'll do 5.56, 6.8, 7.62x39 and 5.45x39...you just gotta carry around barrels, bolts and mags for the quick change :)

BlueSkyJaunte 12-15-2010 12:50 PM

ARs are like LEGO. You can do whatever the hell you want with them, and they'll be pretty danged accurate. No special tools required.

I'm a bigger fan of the .308 AR (AR-10, SR-25, etc.) platform than the AR-15.

I get 1/2 MOA out of my .308 AR off the bipod and I recently ran it through a 2-day class in dusty, grimy conditions without a hiccup. Without cleaning. You aren't going to do that with a FAL, AK, lever gun, or anything else short of a REALLY FRIKKIN' EXPENSIVE M1A or a decent bolt action.

Oh, and if you like .50 BMG, they make an AR upper for that too. :D Zel Custom Mfg

MotoSook 12-15-2010 01:05 PM

Blue - what length barrel on your .308? I'm building a MA-TEN and was thinking 18" DPMS SASS barrel.

JTO 12-15-2010 02:02 PM

I have shot both the AK and AR platforms in competition. The AR triggers can be made much better by dropping a Timney in the lower. The AK trigger will always be a two-stage, I think. Its easy to mount optics on the AR. The AK is reliable and shoots reasonably well out to about 300 yards. The AR can double that distance.

I have both the .308 AP4 and the 5.56 carbine, both by DPMS. They have been reliable and accurate weapons. If all hell breaks loose, the .308 is the one that sits in the gun safe with the light and Eotech, with a bunch of loaded magazines. The AR is used for 3 Gun and does that game well. It is fun to shoot but carries half the power of the .308. That is one benefit the AK has over the AR; better energy downrange than a .22.

My $0.02.

24" stainless bull barrel. It's HEAVY.

I'm thinking of having it cut down to 18 or 20", re-crowned, and threaded for fun attachments. :D .308 gets a complete burn at 20"... 18" loses only maybe 30 fps off of a 20" barrel.

That MA-TEN part looks nice. The best thing about it is that you can use the MagPul .308 mags. They are the bee's knees, IMHO.

I have a Timney 3# trigger in mine. Absolutely the best upgrade I have ever made to an AR, and it takes about 10 minutes to install.

Vash: Come on out. If you're not afraid of rattlers, coyotes, and drug cartels we'll take you out to where you can stretch out to 1000 yards. :)

MotoSook 12-15-2010 02:42 PM

I waited to build a .308 AR...waited for Magpul to come out with a mag :). I'll probably get the 18" barrel, but I wonder what kind of accuracy I'd get with it compared to the 24"'barrel.

On topic, I debated getting an AK, but now that there are better options with a .308 AR, it was an easy decision.

JTO 12-15-2010 03:07 PM

My little wimpy 16" barrel on my .308 AP4 shoots minute of angle. Considering what it is, I'm please with that. That's with a handload using 147 FMJs! Pretty good considering the projectile.

You know, they say, barrel length has no affect on accuracy. Just velocity.

I'd like to add a AR to my collection, currently have my Browning A5 Lt 12 ( Belgium ) for bird hunting, a Marlin 336 30. 30. since I was a kid and a cool Remington 11-87 Special purpose auto 12, all Camo with strap that my best friend gave me. He received the camo 12 as a gift, given to him by General Norman Schwarzkopf after a duck hunt years ago.

the debate of AR vs AK is like > what kind of oil should I use? It is endless....

The two weapons > one USA designed with tight tolerances[and therefore improved accuracy] is going to be more accurate - to a point - out to about 400m > unless you are a Marine > and those guys can hit center of mass with an M-16 to about 600+ meters..

The AK is the most prolific weapon in the world >> why? cause the thing functions under the most grueling conditions > tolerances are bigger > weapon is typically less accurate that a AR ..It was designed as a combat weapon..

Having said all that > I have a Norinko MAC-90 > it's a pretty accurate weapon > I've only shot it at a 100m range > but it shoots good ...

It's reallly a toss up.. If I had ONLY one weapon available > I'd go with the AK
