Carbonite Back-up service
 

I just installed Carbonite 15-day trial and I have a question for those that are using it. So far, it looks non-intrusive and easy to use.

The only issue that I really have with it is, although I can select individual video file for back-up, I cannot select a file type that's not on the default back-up, or i.e. all video files.

In the purchased version, is there a way to select video file types for back-up?

Not sure how to answer your ? but I had to restore my hard drive from Carbonite once, and it restored a whole bunch of file extensions that I was unfamiliar with.

I would rather back my own files up to an external drive. You can copy the ones you need at your own pace, or use the built-in windows backup utility to do it. I can't stand monthly fees on things though.

I agree. Also, if the company goes belly up you have nothing (has already happened with photo sharing or files storage website businesses). Lastly, how safe is that info from hackers or from Carbonite themselves?

I have a network drive that I back-up to, but the problem is that it's on site. If there were a fire and I wasn't able to grab it I'd be screwed. Off site back-up is the only way to guaranty that your data will be safe when the SHTF. I want both. On site for convince, off site for security.

I’ve thought about having two 1Tbt external network drives for back-up, rotating them once a week and taking the off rotation drive to work. The worse that would happen is to lose one week worth of data. But that means I would have to be disciplined enough to stay on it and frankly I don’t trust myself to do it.

I have been wondering about this too. I was thinking of trying Carbonite...but what if they go away ?? Same with Flickr and other photo sites.

I use a network storage device as backup. Then I back that up to an external hard drive that I keep locked in my desk at work. I bring it home once a month to refresh the back-up.

I control the media. I don't pay any fees, and I have both instant and off-site backup.
