Fruitcake Fans

Anyone want to offer their opinion of Fruitcake? I know that I'll be ridiculed but I like it. What is considered the best? Read a story in a Food magazine years ago that suggested fruitcake be soaked in fine brandy, wrapped in cheesecloth, sealed in a tin and let age for several years. Anyone do this?

How about fruitbread instead? Get a pannetone and give it a try.. much better, goes great w/ coffee in the morning

I used to like my moms. She would soak them in brandy for a couple of weeks (dad said you needed chaser with a slice). Sadly I will probably never eat good fruitcake again.

Fruitcake = doorstop

How did I know it'd be Bill leading the fruitcake talks? Wife has an old Southern recipe that's about 100 proof. Her great aunt used to let them soak for days. Not sure about years.

Ok Scotty. Tell the wife to make some. We can barter.

Brandy, huh? I guess that explains why I hate fruitcake... my parents don't drink.

A local bakery tops their fruitcake with a thick layer of marzipan. It is outstanding.

Claxtin Fruitcake from Claxton GA. That stuff was everywhere when I was growing.

Hated it then and hate it now

Some of the best fruitcake I have had is from Corsicana, Texas:

Fruitcakes | Texas Fruitcakes, Pecan Cake - Collin Street Bakery.

I really like fruitcake. It's a shame it has so many calories and carbs.

Best,
Tom

I always appreciate a good fruitcake. My Mom and Gran used to make them and I have it programed into my little head that it's a great thing :)

My GF is somewhat of an expert at making fruitcakes. I've just quizzed her and she said you always make a Christmas cake in October and feed it occasionally with brandy until it's iced a day or two before Christmas. Jenny uses the Delia Smith (British) recipe for her cakes.

i had one that came in a tiny loaf. about 6" long, and 2x2 the other dimensions. it was delicious! those enormous round things with green cherries and blue "fruit" are downright scary.

i wish i knew that one. i'll ask my mom tomorrow. it was great with coffee. no booze in this one.

Uh... Fruitcake. There are lot Fruits, Nuts, and Flaks in California. Maybe one of them could tell you. :)

My Grandmother use to make them ever year. I grew up eating them and I guess developed a taste for it. I don't think I have tasted one since my Grandmother got to old to make them anymore.

The older I get the more I miss somethings, and sitting here on a rainy night in LA I would give almost anything to sit once again and have a nice cup of tea and a slice of Fruit Cake with my Grandmother.

I like fruitcake, my friend makes every year and is loaded with rum or brandy, yummy!

I love a good fruit cake...HATE cheap ones. I have a local lady that make one of the best I have ever had. lots of nuts and she dries/candies her own fruit to put in them.
BTW, I grew up about ten miles from the Claxton Fruitcake company..they do make a pretty good one but many times they are a little less than fresh in the stores.

Hate to say it but I like them!

I was searching for a recipe and I like fruit cake, so I thought I'd resurrect this thread.

Christmas time will be round the corner and I'm planning on my once-a-year time as the family baker. Fruitcake is the annual goal here, made months in advance and soaked in copious amounts of Myers Extra Dark Rum. I use at least an entire bottle of rum during the aging process and I use cheese cloth to wrap it.

Each year I mess with the recipe and it seems like I still haven't found the perfect fruit cake. I have issues with some of the candied fruit ingredients, some of them smell like formaldehyde. I like some nuts, but mostly rum rehydrated fruits like; cherries, prunes, raisins, sultanas, currants, dates, figs, lingon and cranberries.

So I'm looking for a heavy medium to dark recipe. Can anyone help out? Any famous recipes out there?

The final product goes to parties and neighbors. A great deal of time and expense goes into these little cakes, so I'm glad no one has complained yet.
