Happy Brithday to the finest combat sidearm in the world.

While they would never be my choice for a "bullseye competition" gun, my Glock is perfection in my mind when it comes to a weapon I would trust my life to in a shootout. ;)

I never did like plastic - er, I mean "polymer" guns.

My gen 1 Glock, which I must have bought in the late 80s, not all that long after they started importing to the US, is still going strong.

I didn't realise that they were that young of a company.

While it is always fun to post an inaccurate label on new technology and poke fun at it. The reality is that the Glock is head and shoulders the best combat pistol in the world.

It is the most reliable with factory ammunition.
It is the most durable of all service pistols.
It is the most intuitive to use.
It has few parts and cannot be assembled incorrectly and be functional.
It has both large capacity and small grip dimensions.
It is easy to train with and easy to obtain combat effectiveness with.
It is not burdened with extraneous safeties and safety devices; it has only what is needed and nothing else.
It is less expensive to manufacture, less expensive to maintain, less expensive to master.

It was not designed for idiots or those that think multiple safeties are "safer". It was designed by an engineer who freely admits to looking at all the world's pistol designs had to offer and taking the best of them to create a new paradigm that surpassed all previous designs. Much like the AK47, it made the optimum compromises to achieve what has never been achieved before. Many people have tried to improve the AK47 with forged receivers, tighter tolerances, etc. All based on a totally mistaken understanding of the design’s fundamental superiority. Such is the case with the Glock also.

You know that no one loves beautiful design, precision metal work and fine wood more than I do. A significant part of my life was spent building and repairing fine rifles and shotguns. But the practical engineer in me recognizes the required from the unnecessary. In terms of what a combat pistol requires, the Glock excells like no other current or past offering.

I prefer my H&K USP over the Glock. It doesn't look like it got hit by an ugly stick and as far as polymer pistols go, I can shoot it the best out of the bunch.
