I know there are some Van Halen fans on this board. Was reading this excerpt with pictures from Sammy Hagar's upcoming book "Red". Eddie comes off as a bit of a "whack job" these days.

VH isn't just Eddie, Alex, Dave, or Mike. The combination when those guys gelled is amazing.

I'm a drummer so I wasn't into them for the guitar playing. It was the total package of the song. Sure, it's dated but those first 2 albums still kick hiney. I think the material they did with SH is good but not my favorites. Heck the gary Cherone period wasn't all bad but I'm still a pre-Sammy fan at heart.

As far as Eddie being a whack-job- to be in that industry and do what VH did you have to be a little out there.

Kudos to Michael Anthony. He did his job as expected with nary a complaint it seems. His backing vocals are epic once you really listen for them.

Thanks! Most don't catch the guitar.

Very classy of "Red". Document a good friend's demise for money and to cover his own ass. Sammy was the opening act for every band that came to town for at least ten years before VH made him a star.

Jeezus christ Sammy looks kind of like Glenn Close in that pic.

Damn the 80's were terrible.

I saw them twice on that Sammy reunion tour, both shows the night after terrible break-up fights with my then fiance. I so needed to go to those shows. Everyone said that tour was such a disaster, but honestly, I must have caught them on the two good nights of the tour. One was in DC and then a few mos. later in Atlantic City. They crushed that last show. Never had so much fun.

I've heard Ed's new wife has totally straightened him out in the last few years. He's looked totally normal and healthy for the last few years. They're supposed to be touring this year, so we'll see if he still has it. I'm sure he does.

I had front row for a show on the Balance tour and Eddie walked out with a cane for the encore. I think that Letterman clip was just before his hip replacement. And Alex was usually wearing a neck brace on that tour too. He looked like Stalin for a while when he grew a huge mustache.
