Bathroom remodel
 

Not sure what I signed on for here, but I have to get this done (as well as Pergo the rest of the house) so I can spend some quality time in the shop without guilt (or at least without nagging)

Basically, I'm re-doing a 10-year old crappy tile job

Although I am a DIY guy myself, I would check out craigslist and see if you can find someone to do this for you. I am hiring quality contractors in Oregon for $25-30 hour. Their work is top notch and guess who doesn't have to do it? Me.

That is exactly like my shower, I think it is even the same tile; the soap dish and hardware are definitely the same, did it have an Atlas shower door? I just looked, it is the same, but mirror image.

I hired a professional, independent to do my tile work on a T&M basis. His rate was $40/hr. and I got to use his discount at the local tile suppliers to buy my tile. That saved me a decent amount of money. Looks like they floated the base on yours when it was first done. If I were to retile it, I'd go with the 1/2 in. thick concrete board base.

We are currently finalizing the planning of our bathroom reno. It is a 60s home that has a 7 x 10 main bathroom that had endured a reno in the mid-90s by the PO. Try as we might, we couldn't jam a shower booth, tub & vanity into the space without closing it down. So we are gutting it & replacing everything.

The plan so far:

New vanity. Granite top with undermount sink (color TBD). New mirror. 10mm glass divider mounted on a 1/2 wall. New soaker tub - we know a whirlpool would never be used. New Toto Drake toilet. Porcelain tile in tub/shower area with marble listello/backsplash. Matching porcelain tile on floor.

So far it is looking like $5K + materials & $6K contractor bill. It will probably end up around $13K.

We are interviewing contractors. One no show. One Mr Fix-it who came in at $3500 labor but he was obviously way over his skill level. One guy who took 2 weeks to email the quote: $5900. One Cambodian guy (with a sterling personal recommendation) who wants cash: $5700. One very intense Russian: $TBA.

We will have to sponge-bath and/or shower at a neighbor's for 7 - 10 days. :eek:

We did it two years ago. Two small 3-piece bathrooms combined into one decent-sized bathroom. Ripped everything out right down to the joists and studs and built from scratch. About $27k when all was said and done, labour and materials. We went with top-of-the-line everything.

I like the glass between the tub and the vanity. It really opens the room up. Nice plan!

Indeed it did have an Atlas door.

I don't like it, but its fine.

Just seems like a lot of work! But perhaps that was pre-backer board. Boy does that stuff make tiling easy.

Still, most of the bathrooms I have had to renovate had been done with tile straight over drywall--but they only lasted 40 years.

We still float ours. My tile man hates it but he's trained.

When I re-did our bathroom I moved a wall 4 ft. moved the toilet 18" (cut slab and moved plumbing). all new water lines to moved sink, added double shower heads in 6 ft x 6 ft monster shower.

Not for the faint of heart. Not nearly as nice tile as I know Trekkor can do but it still impresses house guests.
