The iconic Ford Mustang

Yeah, I love Porsches. Honestly, if I could have a half a dozen of them, I would. The longer I owned my old '88 911 the more impressive I found it even at 160k miles, after almost 5 years of DAILY DRIVING and needing some TLC. Absolutely BRILLIANT cars!

Still, I'm an automotive enthusiast. Just like I find myself looking at blonds, brunettes, redheads, chicks with tats, ghost white skin tans, short hair, long hair, biggish boobs, small boobs, whatever. I also find myself looking at German cars, Italian cars, Japanese cars and American cars. I like slow cars and fast cars if they have character.

The Ford Mustang is an ICON. It's been around LONGER than our 911 (first year '64½ vs '65) (yeah, the 911 was a show car in '63, but I'm talking production). It's been a top performer in it's niche (for the most part) the entire time. It's been the dream car of lots of folks whether adolescent or not.

It does get tiring with Paul injecting his car into so many posts. I don't think it's the car itself (except for some snobs), but it's more about how he does it.

The new models are VERY impressive from the 300+hp 6cyl that gets 30+mpg, to the new V-8 models that are faster on the track than an M3.

I still prefer the classics, but even find a soft spot in my heart for some that really aren't quite yet classics.

So how about it. Rather than a bunch of hating, why can't we have a thread, just one, that sings the praises of a car that really is a peer in many ways of our beloved Porsche 911.

They've had plenty of good...

So does no one have anything positive to say about Mustangs?

I do!

I'm an open minded car guy.

I do not own a PORSCHE. I will but right now I don't.

I'm sure you all have seen my '67 so I won't post it.

700,000 mustangs built in '67 alone!

The Mustang is bought & loved by all...everybody from the captains of industry to the working stiff.

Well, loved by almost all.

Also, put the clue "McQueen movie car" in a crossword puzzle. 7 letters. Give ya odds 9 out of 10 would write Mustang...

Mustangs are cool in my book but any "Yank Tank" down here is considered something special.
Corvettes have a following all of their own. Some early cars have changed owners more than 20 times.

Bear in mind most of them down here have been converted them to RHD. More recently the laws have changed and LHD cars can be driven as is.

(Excuse my rants. I love Australia and the town I live in)

I had a '65 with HiPo 289, and a very short rear end. It ripped, I mean it topped out at 100 mph (not kidding) but it accelerated veeeery nicely. Fun to drive, even if the ''drifting'' thing wasn't around yet. I like the 65-66's a lot and would like another one someday.

I also like the Bullitt and Boss era Mustangs.

A bit of a rough patch in the 1970s.

In the 80s, the SVO was one of my favorite cars. I almost got one, was seduced by the Sierra Cosworth, or rather the US version Merkur. Wish I'd got the SVO.

The Mustang just-passed is a great looking car, especially the Bullitt. The current version has droopy eyes but it is growing on me.

I have a list of about 20 cars I'd consider having - not a list of expensive dream cars, I mean cars you can buy, drive daily, park in the rain downtown, but enjoy a lot - basically, the shopping list for my next car.

Another 65 Mustang, a coupe with blown 289 and Shelby bodywork but a quieter paint job, is on the list.

Along with stuff like BMW 3.0 CS, Jag series 1 XKE, Ferrari 400i, BMW E28 M5, Porsche 928S4 or later, Alfa GT, Mercedes 190SL Pagoda, Citroën SM, etc. It's not a bad list for the Mustang to be on, and there's hardly any other domestic on the list.

I had a 64 1/2 with the 260V8. Wish I hadn't sold it, would have been worth some real $ these days.

I typically don't like any "new" car and the new Mustang is no exception. I have been looking at 65-66's on CL for fun, prices seem to be lower than I would have expected. Wouldn't mind a 65 fastback someday.

There's a billionare (I forget what the hell he did to make the $$$) here that drives a cherry 64.5 as a DD. It's a gorgeous car, but I'm pretty sure my DD would be Italian if I had that kind of money.

GothingNC 04-30-2011 07:37 AM

I just spotted a black 65 or 66 Fastback yesterday on the road in Raleigh.

One of my favorite US made cars.

When you're a Billionaire you can drive anything you want. There's no need to prove anything to anyone.

924's anyone?

sammyg2 04-30-2011 08:31 AM

I used to have a 1978 mustang II mach 1

First new car I ever bought, was in high school working at a gas station.
Had a 302 cu in V8 engine, automatic, and 139 hp to go along with the 14 mpg.

Worst money I ever spent.

It was a very bad time for mustangs. The Fiesta was quicker!

Hawktel 04-30-2011 08:52 AM

I do like a good Mach 1. They look cool. I think a nice 72 would be fun.

dafischer 04-30-2011 09:08 AM

Here's the 66 that I sold yesterday. Hated to see it go, but it was a project that I didn't see myself finishing anytime soon.
