Doggy digging
 

Apparently my dog wants to emulate Clint Eastwod in Escape from Alcatraz. She insists on digging under our stockade fence to get out.

Any suggestions??? I have about 450 ft of fence......

more exercise...
good for him and you..

check his nails..
he may be trying to file them..

it doesn't 'shock' them..

I had a Doberman many years ago that was a climber. She would scale the fence in no time. I had to resort to an electric wire to stop her. After she was zapped just twice she would not go close to the fence. I unplugged it after that. The transformer is not real expensive. The wire is cheap. It is some work to insulate it from the fence.

i owned the ultimate escape artist. one of my shelter dog failures.

the only way to stop her from digging under was to add wire fabric to the bottom. i folded it like an "L" and stapled it to the bottom of the fence. a dog will automatically head for the corner of that "L" and start digging. it stopped her cold. i had alot of fence too. but the trick worked. sorta..she started pulling fence boards off with her jaws.

I had this problem too. What worked for me was to bury some of the dog's feces in the hole and cover it up. If you do this a few times, the dog will dig up their own waste in a short time. They will usually start some new destructive behavior instead of digging. The dog probably needs more attention. Good luck.

Got to say that Labs are pretty close to being the" you can't keep me in this fence".

Well, after 4 labs, our kennel is dig proof... the fence is 6 foot high and it sits on a concrete foundation that the concrete wall is 2 foot down the dirt grade with a 6" footing under the wall.

Yes, they dig holes but after a foot down they give up, I make it easy for them to dig with about 3-4 inches of cedar shaving on top. Sometimes I let them dig multiple holes for them to get the idea that escaping won't happen. I also have about 10-12 bones in the kennel.

I have also had them pull the fencing and once my current lab did get out but some baling wire fixed that problem. She now happily goes into the kennel for her bone chewing or sleeping time of day.

A long time ago I did the same thing to keep my dogs in... The house I was living in was old and fence boards were all rotten.
Eventually I built a full cage made of mesh to keep them in while I was at work. :(

Recently a lady I know installed an electric fence to keep her dogs in. Just a couple of strands of wire did the trick.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. Bury some chicken wire along the bottom of the fence.
The one thing that is good, is that my cattle dog usually starts barking at the other one when she starts digging and alerts us.

It may not help with the digging under a fence, but if you want to keep a dog out of a planter, toss a whole bunch of 6" rose vine clippings in there.

Hey Vinnie, Get him/her a little sandbox and place bones in it. He/she will learn to dig in there only.

We've been thinking of the sandbox idea for our Husky.
The problem with being in Seattle is keeping it a sandbox vs. a mudpit. Though he thinks the yard is a mudfit suitable for digging already, so at least it'd be contained. :)
