Scotch Glasses

So for years, I've been drinking fine single malt out of small glasses. Just, you know, normal glasses, just a size between "shot" and "small." Well, for reasons complicated beyond this post, I no longer have those glasses....

... and I'm wondering if there's any tangible difference between $2 Whiskey glasses from K-Mart and $15 Glencairn Scotch glasses from Wine Enthusiast. Whiskey Stones are a must, I think, if I'm going to go for a set of actual Scotch glasses, but ... does it really matter what glass you drink it from? Can anyone here actually taste a difference? Is it better in some way?

I don't think the glass makes a difference but I would drink any single malt neat.

Here is mine but not for Scotch!

There is no difference in taste IMO but I prefer drinking scotch from a crystal glass... It gives it a sense of occasion.
It's like drinking good tea from a fine china cup and saucer.

In the movie "Blade Runner" Harrison Ford drunk from square shaped glasses. I looked for years and finally found a web page that sells them.

I usually use rock glasses...

I could be old fashioned (well the pun is there) but I think an Old Fashion style glass is better for most spirits. Slanted side, no compound curves, not too thick of rim, but not wine thin; complete control over the sip.

So I am not supposed to use a jelly jar?

Heck, I've been using Mason Quart jars for the last week or two. Ok for a 10 year Scotch, but a poor choice for an 18 year Islay, if you ask me. While I'm trying to figure out if good glasses are really worth it, I picked up a set of 6oz juice glasses. Heavy glass, good size, should work ok for now.

:)

Wise choice...might not be as likely to break when you get smashed and drop one.

A Bourbon drinker will tell you 'not much'.

A Scotch drinker will tell you 'it's an acquired taste'.

Exactly! This ex bourbon swiller would tell you scotch tastes like the cold medicine 1950's moms would force down the throats of their unwilling children.

Tastes a lot like horse linament smells...

Back to glasses...I have a pair of rosenthal crystal glasses..the Porsche crest made of a blob of glass melted to the bottom 1/3 of them. Won as a door prize at a PCA thing back in the early 70's. Anybody here remember these?

I bartended for about 5 years. I've tried several different Scotches. I'm going to go with "It's an acquired taste." I never managed to acquire it. I've tried single malts, old, you name it. I just can't like the stuff.

I once put a tiny amount in several glasses at work and tried them all (including an Irish Whiskey or two). I believe there was one Scotch and one Irish whiskey where I thought, "that's not nearly as bad as the others." It was Jameson and, I think, Glenfiddich.

It's just not worth it to me to try really hard to acquire a taste for something that's expensive anyway. I've got enough expensive tastes. I don't need to develop more.

I drink my favorite single malt out of one of these.

I drink scotch on occasion but it's not my drink of choice.

While we're on the subject, there was a short article in Playboy maybe 10 years ago about company Christmas parties. It explained why Scotch is the drink of choice at said parties. I recall that it was a rather funny article but I haven't been able to find it since. Anyone here know it?

send me some fine single malt Scotch and I will run a scientifically valid test to determine if there's any tangible difference between $2 Whiskey glasses from K-Mart and $15 Glencairn Scotch glasses.

Go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of Johnnie Walker or Glenlivet in a combo pack that comes with two nice scoth glasses. I have a set of each, and the combo packs were the same price as the bottles themselves.
