Electrikery
I have one of those feared AUDI station wagons as a daily driver-----and I have an electrical problem that needs to be explained to my thick skull. [I learned all this theory many ,many, years ago and I have forgotten it with old age!
Problem--the rear wiper wont work. My multi meter has long gone and i am stuck without taking it to an $$$ electrician. First thing I did was check the fuses. They are OK. The wiper switch is sprung return push on the main wiper stalk---the washer pump works OK .I tried 12 volts into the motor, and it runs on both inputs ,I guess one lead is associated with the wiper 'park'. ----What I would like is a knowledgeable Forum member to explain to me the function of the relay[which I finally located ,under the rear seat]---The local Audi dealer quoted me $55.00 plus 15% tax, and delivery from Singapore. I found one on e-bay and bought it for $3.99.;)--its in the mail!, dont know what I'll do if it doesnt solve the problem. Heres a wiring diagram-----go, experts[please] http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309394886.jpg |
I've had Audi's as daily drivers for 25 years now - nothing to fear. (Lots to work on!)
My recollection is that J30 is sortof like a "time delay relay" for the rear wiper. It outputs voltage to the rear wiper motor every so often so that it wipes the rear window, waits a while, and wipes again. For ~$4 replacement, you can't go wrong. |
Time to go to Harbor Freight and pick up a $2.99 meter.
Usually it is a wire in the flexible part that breaks. |
What year audi avante are you dealing with?
|
Thanks Guys--The car is the last of the Audi 80--'96-ex Japan assembled.--2.6 V6----This is my second Avant and the other one did have broken wires in the loom from the body to the rear hatch,so it was the first place I looked.
Further research, I found the correct procedure for rear wiper operation Press rear wiper sprung switch and the wiper operates once every 6 secs. Press again to stop wiper.--So the delay function is in the relay,it seems. Press that sprung switch and hold and the washer and wiper operate. Release and washer stops, wiper runs for 4 secs. ---tricky little relay it seems! replacement should get here in next couple of days, hope thats the problem! I had a "friend" test the relay ,but I think he knew less about it than I did. We dont have a Harbour Freight down here ,but I think I can get a cheap meter for about ten bucks.---Thanks for the help. |
Get a multimeter. I don't want to seem like a rich guy bragging, but the other day I got a standard Fluke (like a 77 or a 70 or something....does voltage, continuity, etc.) on Craigslist for like $30. They're like $4 at Harbor Freight.
Also.....German relays are like dime-a-dozen. One-year AUDI relays might be expensive, but there is probably a VW version, same thing, for $10. |
Is there Harbor Freight in New Zealand?
