Carmageddon

Here is comes! How bad will this be? I scheduled my last meeting in Korea Town at 2pm, so that should be one hour. What will the 10 FWY look like going east I wonder...

When does it start?
Ramps will begin closing at 7 p.m. Friday, July 15. (Start that evening commute early.) Lanes will begin closing at 10 p.m. The entire freeway will be shut down at midnight Saturday. Officials hope to reopen the freeway by 5 a.m. Monday. Ramps and connectors are scheduled to be reopened at 6 a.m.

Yawn,

It is the 405 shutdown between 10 and 101... the Sepulvada pass... only effects the west side.

BeyGon 07-15-2011 08:12 AM

I think I will avoid that area for a long time. I will be going up to SanFran in August but I think I might take the 605 to the 210, miss all of LA.

And anyone wanting to go anywhere near there. When I read they were going to tear down half the bridge, I thought East or West half. I could never understand why they didn't cut a hole in the divider and have 2-way traffic on one side. Then I saw the bridge spans the whole freeway. Half would have required a new support in the middle of the road.

But one half long ways? I mean they have to cut it half long ways first! That's just stupid. Especially since they are waiting months to do the remaining strip of bridge. Is this how engineers think?

The real excitement will come if (when) they don't finish in time for the Monday morning rush hour...

nostatic 07-15-2011 08:24 AM

We'll see. I have a gig tonight at Sonny McLeans in Santa Monica (26th and Wilshire). I live in SM and can take back surface streets. We'll see how the crowd is. Maybe the locals will show up in force.

Saturday I play a wedding in Torrance at noon. Drive south shouldn't be bad as I'm south of the 10. The drive back may be interesting.

Sunday night I have a gig in Marina del Rey. I now live about 1.5 miles away from there but it is along Lincoln Bl which is "PCH" south of the 10. May be nasty.

Or there may be no one out. We'll see...

If i leave the west side this evening a little later than usual, i should have the best commute ever...but the earlier i leave the worse its going to be. Maybe i should just leave now...

BeyGon 07-15-2011 08:45 AM

Milt, I don't understand it either but then I don't have any information on it. I just know and consider this, it's CALTRANS.

i havent dropped the ball on a deadline yet..(knocking on wood!) and we have closed the bay bridge.

my most stressfull nailbiter. i had to close the 101. nightly. we drove piles across the freeway. AT NIGHT! i had more people in their pajamas yelling at me..i was a very unseasoned engineer.

we had to get the piles into the ground, and the highway reopened by 5:00 am. one mis-step and we leave a pile partially sticking out of the ground. i would be fired.

it was awesome. the decision to call it a night, or start another pile was a thing of nightmares. one night we got a pile stuck. 10' stuck in the air. we had 15 minutes to jackhammer it, pull it out, put the plates on..and let the traffic go. CHP bought me a coffee and donut. i wished they spiked it.

I was just there. I loved the digital signs that said "BIG DELAY." The 405 is hell on Earth when it's running smoothly. I think every meeting I had in LA this week, the client brought this topic up. Sounds like everyone is well prepared.

vash 07-15-2011 09:07 AM

believe me, the locals have the governor on speed dial.

here we are on the freeway..at night. i wish SoCal guys the best. i was going to go down there for some R&R, nevermind.

no problem -- just take transit until it's finished

ooops! you guys have no transit!!

speeder 07-15-2011 02:18 PM

We have really good mass transit. The problem is that we need jet packs for this. When I was a kid, they told us that we'd have them by now.

daepp 07-15-2011 02:32 PM

I was on the 405N last night at Sunset. Seemed like they closed it early :)

It's going to be a nice weekend in Orange County.

Are they closing the east - west ont the 10 and 101? Or just the north - south?

craigster59 07-15-2011 04:55 PM

Off to Kernville to go fishing. I'm staying as far from the 405 as I can..
