Had a power faliure last night and now the upstairs inside fan is blowing but the outside/compressor unit is not. I've looked for tripped breakers and found none. Is there anything else I can do myself before I call a tech? Everything was operating normal before the failure.

Did you check the box by the compressor? I know on my heat pump there are fuses right by it.

Is it a newer house? Regulations about air exchange since houses are a lot tighter, there may be a timer that stopped when the power went out and now it is running at a different time than normal.

Turn your AC down at the thermostat and see if it kicks on. You may have lost your settings on your thermostat also.

Built 2006. I just kicked it down to 60. The thermostat is normal

Fixed! Pulled the cover off and the capacitor was swollen. It checked bad. $15 later and we are blowing cold!

First, if you attempt.ANYTHING please kill all power. I turned all hvac breakers and the home main. This first image is what it links like behind the access panel.

New capacitor installed. Note how the top is indented and flat where the wires plug in.

. Notice the top is bulged? Bad capacitor! This was an easy fix.4 screws to access.2 screws to remove capacitor. You would have to try really hard to mess up the wiring! Ahhhhh conditioned air!

FYI: The black insulator above the cap is called the contactor (like a relay): those burn out as well. Had to replace mine last year.

Thanks. I knew/know nothing about hvac. After a little research It didn't seem like it was something I couldnt do. What were the symptoms for the bad contactor?

No fan on the outside unit.
