5 weeks paid vacation
I'm on week 3 of 5 consecutive weeks of vacation. I've not taken this much time off at once since college. Wow, it feels really, really nice. Yeah, I took the time because we have a little guy around now, but I've been finding it's done a lot of good for me.

Cool, most folks (except our diamond driller) don't get that much PTO in a year. Good for you for the vaca and the rug rat.
I'm contact to hire right now the place that I'm working will give 4 weeks of PTO when I get hired on. I'm VERY much looking forward to that. I've never had more than 2 weeks before. |

Enjoy it and cherish it - the only time in my life I've ever taken more than a week was when I got laid off and I hated every single second of it for that reason (constant stress, it's the worst anxiety attack of your life and it doesn't go away or let up).
You're very lucky and in a good spot - congrats! Last edited by Porsche-O-Phile; 08-17-2011 at 08:07 PM.. |

Very cool. I think Ive taken 2 weeks at a time max. I did work for one company that every 7yrs gave you a paid sabbatical. At 7 yrs we had 6 weeks vacation and the company gave us another 6 weeks and they wanted you to take it all at once. Stupid me, I left the company 6 months before I got the sabbatical.

5 weeks is so cool and untill now I never had that perk (I'm the diamond driller) always laid off always no security, always wondering when the next work would come.
5 weeks means 2 decent breaks or spaced properly extra time during our traditional holidays, had a buddy and he would take his break on friday and monday of every week during the summer, he had time with the kids and would golf for the rest, I can understand time off but could never understand the passion of golf. I've maxed out my 48 days a couple times - ie I earn days but lose them because we cap. Am on vacation this week (now down to 43 days on balance) but I ended up doing work emails and calls while at the lake with the boy and his friend. I suck at vacations. But I also have to eat what I kill and my team depends on me to bring in contracts. Gotta pay the bills...

Sounds great!
The most I had was 15 days with 5 more for personal time, doc visits, etc. I'll be back to two weeks when I get a job. |

I don't call it vacation - I call it "severance pay"...
![]() Just kidding. That was the old saying at Boeing where they laid off engineers left and right for years...

I have been off since June 24th. Paid!
A couple of weeks on Grand Cayman and the rest just trying to finish the never ending basement reno.... Back to work next week. My project list hasn't gotten any smaller.

The most I had was 4 weeks + 5 personal days
Currently at 2 weeks + 3 personal days but they never count my personals. I rarely take more than 5 in a year anyway. I miss my lost 2 weeks

I've had up to 5 weeks PTO (sick, vacation all lumped together) at previous employers. My new job gave zero vacation days the first year, and five the second year. I haven't had a vacation since before I started last January and I'm saving my one week for December, so it will be two years straight through without vacation.
In the future I will be sure to make sure I get a good deal on vacation. But when I was offered this job I was unemployed and had to take what I was offered. It sucks, but I've got a steady job so shouldn't complain.

I get 5 weeks a year vacation plus comp time, but I've never been able to take a big chunk of it all at once.
Most I've ever taken off in a row is 11 days (one holiday week plus both weekends), but because of my work schedule I can do that 6 or 7 times a year The first 8 years I worked in this industry I didn't get any paid vacation or sick leave, so I certainly appreciate it now. Doan know about you, but if I took off 5 weeks straight I'd probably have a heck of a time going back to work. |

Amen to that. I took an extra-long vacation in '05 and when I came back I did nothing but stare at the ceiling for a week, wondering why the hell I bothered to return.

I get 15 days a year, but can rollover up to 90 a year. I'm 4 years away from 20 days a year.
My wife gets 10 days a year, so I always end up with 5 extra days every year. I thought it would be nice to take it during her maternity leave so that she didn't feel left out. I've been talking about doing this for years, so I think everyone at work was sick of hearing about it.

entertaining the idea

I get 20 vacation days, 4 personal days, and 15 sick days a year. I can max out at 200 days of vacation and 180 days of sick time. The 4 personal days can't be rolled over, I have to use them every year. I can also earn 15 comp days a year. One of the few perks of my job.
It's great to be able to accrue time to use in situations like the birth of a child, etc.

I took time off when we had our first baby and it was great! You'll never get another opportunity to be with your newborn again so what better use of PTO. Enjoy it, Chris. Congrats again!
