Despite its (numerous) faults, the LAN Drover definitely has a certain appeal.

Cardon shaft? Has it been done yet? If not stop driving it and do it.

Matt, when did you sell the Boxster and get the 996? How did I miss that?

Bill, I had both for a while and did post when I picked up the 996. I ended up selling the Boxster to a co-worker who absolutely adores it. I haven't posted much here recently due to being consumed with work, so I probably didn't say anything about it.

I can't keep up - when did you get a another 996? What made you buy another (I've been thinking about them).

Nice LR!

Edit: just read the last post, but what made you buy another 996..?

My Porsche revolving door is intentional. I buy cars, drive them for about 6 months, fix everything that's wrong with them and catch up on maintenance, then eventually sell them. It keeps me busy tinkering and I get to drive a wide variety of cars, which suits my ADD. I also normally make enough to justify the hobby to my significant other.

My 2001 C2 was a fantastic car, as was my 986 and current 1999 C2. Frankly I think the 986/996 is about the best sports car deal going right now, it absolutely amazes me just how much car you can get for your money. They're the rare sports car that can easily serve as a no-excuses reliable daily driver that you can also flog on the track each weekend. The "enthusiasts" that knock the water-cooled Porsches simply don't know what they're missing. I loved my longhood, but I'll keep my A/C, cruise control, and comfortable ride (even with M030) for a DD.

I thought of this thread when I was out tonight. Cool Land Rover passes me in the left lane got me thinking, maybe I should check one of these out. Maybe a 1/4 mile ahead there is a long steady right. Land Rover slows way down while I accelerate through the corner. I cant do it.

I drive my truck like a truck because it's usually playing the truck role. Not sure how you SUV drivers do it every day, much be a total attitude adjustment, I like driving too much to drive something that doesnt at least corner well.

But what if you had both? Nice Disco 1s are easy to find for $5k or less, so it's not too hard to afford one as a 3rd vehicle.

It's obviously a totally different experience, but in some ways it's nice to just slow down sometimes. Also much better in the snow, hauling 3 kids, going camping, etc.

Makes sense, just not for me at this point. Single, no kids. My pickup does the snow, hauling, camping thing really well. Better mpg too. Maybe if/when I need to tote around the family it will make sense.

Your Landcruiser threads had me looking at those, good ones around are just too much $$ or way too rusted around here. It seems like it would be a cool option to the truck, but then I'd lose the towing and cargo capacity. Last thing I need is to add a car, I already have too many single purpose vehicles.

Can't argue with that. I would probably have a crew cab Tacoma but I'm too cheap to spend $15k on a 10 year old truck with 100k.

For about six months

Keep doing what you do, Matt.

The kids must be getting big, especially the oldest boy: Has the car gene been passed?

I just bought some goodies for his 40 MPH R/C car today, and he's been asking for a racing go-kart. I believe that answer is yes.

He's 7, and getting damn big. Currently says he wants to be an engineer so he can work on airplanes like his dad. Daughter is 4, I'm dreading the teen years already. Youngest is 14 months, he's already pointing at airplanes and getting excited so hopefully I've brainwashed him as well.

It is good to be them: My Dad always had cool cars when I was a kid.

I was, of course, unaffected

Great to see you're doing well, Matt.

So after a whopping 8 months the Disco is gone, replaced by my RX8 as the daily driver. Ultimately it didn't come in that handy over the winter, which was one of the mildest in decades. With the 4wd and hauling capability being taken over by my wife's new truck, I decided I didn't need another vehicle sitting in the driveway.

Contrary to popular belief it was actually very reliable, I didn't have a single mechanical issue. I spent a lot of time fixing things but it was all common used car stuff like the power seat switches, burned out bulbs, and leaky sunroofs. It started every day, never left me stranded, and was ultimately a pleasure to drive. So there's a shocker for you - a reliable Land Rover!
