Help ID car

I saw this car in the back of a shop...no one knew what it is...no paperwork and no numbers on the car.

The hood and fenders fold forward as one unit.

My guess is Triumph.

The emblem shown is on the steering wheel...same emblems is on the wheels.

It's a 1962 to 1967 Triumph Spitfire MkI or MkII.

See how much they'll give you to take it away.

Embraer 09-04-2011 06:03 PM

Steve Carlton 09-04-2011 07:05 PM

It's like a barn find. Except not as good.

Mine didn't.

Had a Mark I. It had the same exact bumper as the Mark II.

Never saw one with a split bumper of any year. Have a pic?

Mark III and on had the raised bumper (for DOT bumper height law) that IMO looked a lot better.

The GT-6 had the same bumper.

williecoyote 09-05-2011 11:51 AM

I don't know which Mk it is, but I had a Mk IV, and this one is definitely older than that.

The one in the picture probably has dual carbs, and produces 50 hp on a very good day. And for an added bonus, Lucas electrics.

lol. You just reminded me of a time the lights went out in my TR6 after driving over a manhole cover. My car's sequence of failing events was identical, 'cept there was just smoke... no fire.

Are they any better with a different engine and electrical system, or is that probably more trouble than it's worth?

DaveE 09-05-2011 01:33 PM

I had a '64 Spitfire. The wipers only worked when it wasn't raining. Apparently the water was too much a drag on them...

when i did my TR4, i kept the original engine. i did ditch the points and add electronic ignition. also, i rewired the rest of the harness (easy job on such a small car) and replaced most stuff with delco. over 30K miles on the car, and not a single hitch.

even the leyland stuff wasn't bad, so long as it was maintained properly. most people who diss it have never owned one, or the one they had was abused.
