Best way to cut straight consistent dovetais in wood?
... using an Incra Fence? I think it is their Ultra fence.
I wanna make some drawers... But I don't wanna buy one of those jigs for a handheld router. |
What is in the water up there in Orygun?

You might be able to borrow one from a local vocational school. When I was teaching we had one in most wood shops and it wasn't something we used a lot.

Finger joint or dovetail? The are the same if you are using a router. Make a key or a dovetail cutout and attach that on the fence (wood fence) of your miter gauge. Make sure the distance is space accordingly to the cutter. Slide the first cut piece (the drawer box) and fit that onto the key. Then, every one of those cuts will be space evenly for as long as you need. I would cut all the dovetail on both the front and side of the drawer box (wider then you need) then rip the pieces to size. This way you can control the start of the joint and don't have to do so much measuring. Forget moving the Incra fence for adjustment. The stop is dead on everytime.

I have used many dovetail jibs and the very best one I ever used is a Leigh jib D4, expensive but worth every penny, can do almost anything with it.

I have a Leigh as well....awesome. Backcut w/ router as much as possible.

dovetails, not Finger joints
do not want to spend a bunch o' buck on a router jig, as noted above; I just want to make a few drawers and then be done with it. The county closed the entire woodworker facility at the Community College that I used to use or I'd have a fantastic shop to work in. |
I have a Porter-Cable jig that, once properly set up, makes great dovetails. If you want to borrow it, I'll ship it to you.
