VINMAN 10-12-2011 12:02 PM

Just got bad news about my dog.

I just got a call from my wife, looks like my Cattle Dog, Toby might be in the early stages of kidney failure. We took him yesterday for a routine check up. they did some blood work and urinalysis His kidney levels came back very high. She took him back this morning, and our vet suggested taking him to a local vet ER for more testing, and they found the same thing and possibly more now they have to do an ultrasound at 4:00. Also additional blood screenings.
Doctor said if it is just an infection or Lyme's it can be treated with antibiotics and fluids. But hes has been vaccinated , and not showing any other symptoms. If it is a chronic defect he said he might have a year.

Hes only 2 yrs old hes my best bud in the world. I'm devastated.

So sorry Vinny. Hope for the best.

wait to get the results.

I had a dog with similar issues and had to put him on either a high or low, (I forget now as its been a many years ago) diet (lots of rice) and that corrected most of the problem. Still had to monitor but I got 3-5 more years out of a 10 year old husky.

Hoping for the best.

Damn...sorry to hear this, Vinny. Are kidney problems common in the breed? 2 sounds awfully young for this to set in.

I'm sorry to hear that.....

Sorry to hear. There are procedures for flushing the kidneys that can be done, if it turns out not to be an infection. I believe it requires a few days stay at the vet's office. This was an option for our elderly Husky who saw her kidney levels slowly increase over about a 2yr period. Also look into specialized kidney support diets.

From what I understand, the Lyme vaccine is only about 80% effective, and dogs can have Lyme without being symptomatic. Did he get tested for Lyme yesterday?

2yrs is awfully young, is kidney disease a genetic issue with Cattle Dogs? Might be worth a search.

Vinman. sorry to hear the early diagnosis is not more encouraging. We'll be hoping and praying for a more optimistic report soon. That's awfully young for that kind of problem.

Hoping for the best.
