Yeah, swype is cool. I finally gave it a try. With some practice, i might get back to my BB speed with texting. :D
My first swype attempt . . . and you can leave the tracer on . . . http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1318710612.jpg Ian |
I'm starting to think that humanity is dumbing down in favour of phones getting smarter.
We had this Blackberry outage this week, and you know what, i kinda liked it.. No checking anything, no blinking led, the phone was just a frigging phone. i could dial a number, or somebody could dial mine. The simple life. I think i may start looking for a retro phone, like my old Siemens S4, there was nothing "smart" about it, but it would run a full week on a battery, and if push comes to shove, i could beat a mugger in the head with it... It was tough, durable and did the job. And to think that i'm in the mobile connectivity bizznezz.. My boss will get really worried when i tell him i no longer want to be part of the smart phone gang. |

Whenever my Pre dies I will begrudgingly join the ranks of iPhone. Next best thing.

Mine, preordered from ATT on the 7th, hasn't even shipped yet...

You must not rate. |
Apparently a business client, that has 3 wireless phones, multiple landlines, etc, etc, doesn't rate....
We preordered 2 iPhones.... |
Went and picked one up the day of release, no one in line

Update: Siri works pretty well. There are limits. But some cool stuff. I asked the atomic weight of Helium - Siri nailed it. I asked why is the sky blue? Nailed it. I asked about Halo Reach and I was sent to some web sites. It is a glimpse into the future for sure.

If Siri is not working on your phone try this:
1. Disable Siri in settings. 2. Reboot phone. 3. Enable Siri. Worked great for me. Siri and the voice to text work very well. I think I will use Siri quite often when in the car. |
Siri is revolutionary because it takes the computer to the next level of intelligence.
At one time, to do stuff (find information, send email, make calendar, calculate something, etc) you went to the individual website or application. Then search engines came and put a layer of intelligence over the "find information" part. Google aggregates all the world's websites and intelligently brings you the information you want. I know, Google wasn't the first search engine and not all web content is available to it. But it is so dominant that its name is a verb, and over time more and more web content will be accessible. Now Siri is starting to put a layer of intelligence over not just "find information", but everything else. Siri aggregates all the iPhone and iOS's apps - of which Google is just one - and intelligently does whatever you want it to do. Think of it like layers of abstraction, if you wish. You can see, by the way, how dangerous this is to Google. Plus the voice interface, which is cool too, but not new or revolutionary. Of course, Siri is just v.1 (maybe v.2 if you count the previous standalone app) and has a long way to go. Just as Google has progressed hugely since v.1. And because Siri is proprietary to Apple, it probably won't be as universal as Google is in search. There will be room for Android's competing intelligent assistant, and Microsoft's; I'd bet Blackberry doesn't have one, maybe ever. |
Android had Vlingo. It's just that Apple has a better marketing department that can educate the consumers.
|
I have Vlingo but don't use it much outside the car (which I am rarely in). I have not seen Siri live in person but from the Siri ad (with the guy jogging) I doubt Vlingo is as capable. For Google searching and texting it's great.

People call Apple a walled garden but in reality what you see in their products is part Apple and part consumers dictating what they want thru consumer behaviour. |

I got mine today. Still trying to figure Siri out. Overall very happy with the phone.

OMG, that is freaking great!!

i had no reason to get a 4S as my 3Gs worked fine, but I succumbed last week. I will say, it has been much better than i thought it would be. The talk to text function alone is worth the price of the phone.

We tried to order online with Verizon the other day, but the final amount due was not calculating my wife's company's discount and we couldn't call to discuss, as we're in China now. We were hoping to have them delivered shortly after we get back home. Still seems to be a 3-4 weeks wait.
