Yes - Brits consider wagons Shooting Brakes

I picked this 08XT Outback recently as a daily. The WRX version of the Ouback. The PO had done some nice and easy to live with mods. It is quick but stealthy and a hoot to drive. I love the practicality of a wagon.

It's a Ranchwagon, actually. A hot rod I built starting in 9/2001, modeled on my vision of what a well-funded SoCal kid would build as a surf wagon in the early 60's. Just this Monday sold it on to a new home here in the PNW. (Breaks my heart a bit, but I have too many large toys.)

We had one as well. We nicknamed it "Christine" because it constantly tried to kill us. Its likelihood of stalling was directly proportional to the likelihood of you dying if it did. As an example: it gave me a 5 second warning of engine trouble before it turned itself off...... In the middle of DC rush-hour traffic...... While going 65+ mph.

Seen yesterday at the Amelia Island Ritz Carlton parking garage...

I always assumed it was "shooting break" - as in something to help them take a break, maybe have some refreshments. I don't think I ever saw it spelled before tho.

Wiki has a good article on shooting brakes...early 1900's Rolls Royce was the earliest I'd heard of, but there may have been horse-drawn brakes as well.

petrolhead611 03-12-2018 03:08 AM

We also call them Estate Cars, Shooting Brake is very rarely heard in conversation any more.

No... as I said 4-5 posts ago, in answer to your post, check Wikipedia for 'Shooting-Brake'...

Rolls Royce used it in the early 1900's, for instance.

And used for horse-drawn wagons 100 years before that.

A shooting brake is a vehicle used to carry guns(ie shooters) and their weapons to a shoot(typically moorland so that people can senselessly kill as many birds as possible).Oh well, definitely better than killing schoolchildren at random in a certain other country.

oldE 03-21-2018 03:57 AM

That was tasteless on so many levels.
I suggest you delete your post.

Few years ago at our Super Slalom. I believe it had a 5.0 L dropped in and was painted with Tremclade by roller.
