Drive legal without license plates

I guess if you can afford to, drive legally without license plates as Steve Jobs did.

Reading the bio now. I've never laughed so hard. The pranks he and Woz pulled were epic!

That's part of the reason why half the >$100K cars around LA have no plates. IMO it's an attempt for those to show off that what they've got is "new." In California the DMV mails you your plates several weeks after you register the vehicle--you don't walk out of the DMV or dealership with plates the day you make the transaction. I'm not an LEO, but IIRC the law may say something like a 6-month grace period where you don't have to affix plates to a new-to-you vehicle, but I think it actually reads that once you've been mailed the plates, you have to put them on. Usually that's within a month or two.

Regardless, getting a new, identical car every 6 months to avoid plating it isn't thinking outside the box, it's just a matter of having more money than God.

Awesome.
That or make payments on switching to new models, and assure their position in the lower class.

I read somewhere(unverified) Bill Gates had a long, drawn-out legal joust with the Cali licensing bureau to legally import his greymarket $1M+ McLaren F1, which remained in storage most of the time.

There's common-sense envionmental laws which apply to mass production and equalizing average statistics, and then there's personally messing with your tax revenue sources.

Cali.

It's pretty common for people in Kali to drive several years on dealer plates. They do it to beat the tolls, parking tickets, etc. 'Photograph that bithcez' is the attitude.

It was both, and Seinfeld too.

My mistake. That was a decade ago. I was thinking of someone else's new toy which they couldn't play with.

BTW John, Cali had nothing to do with Bill Gates and his 959. Gates lives in Washington and it was impounded at Customs in Seattle.

Gates/Allen's issue with the 959 had to do with federal DOT standards. The 959 was never crash-tested per US DOT safety requirements and Porsche refused to build two just to destroy to appease them, making the cars technically illegal in the US (typical bureaucratic stupidity), never mind that the cars had some of the most advanced safety features of their time and were some of the best engineered vehicles ever built both from performance and safety perspectives, as borne out by numerous track events.

Federal issue, not state. Eventually common sense prevailed and the 959s were allowed in.

FWIW cars w/o license plates are not at all uncommon in CA. Neither are cars with flagrantly expired plates, but that's another issue and different socioeconomic demographic entirely...

I drove my Benz for probably 2-3 months before I ever got around to putting rhe plates on it. Nobody cares or ever gave me a hard time about it. Probably most cars on the road these days have at least one or two things that are technically "illegal" about them at any given time, the regulations and laws have gotten so ridiculous and numerous. I think my window tint is technically illegal as well as the license plate covers - but I like the way they look and don't mind risking a fix-it ticket over it. My 944s front plate is still in the glove box. Maybe I'll bother putting it one someday, maybe not... I hate them anyway - look stupid. If some yokel cop really wants to give me a hard time over it, let him. I suspect they (and I) have more important things to worry about in life however.

Comedian Adam Carolla bragged about driving his car for 4 years with the dealer plates and no tickets. It was a leased Audi S4 so it always looked kind of new.

Everyone does that. The biggest risk they take is getting pulled-over and ordered to install their license plates. That happened to my ex-GF once, she asked the cop, "do you have a screwdriver?"

There are loop holes everywhere, in any state. We have a law in Texas mandating you must have two plates, one affixed to the front and one to the rear. What most people don't know is, if the car was not manufactured to receive a plate or holder, you don't have to affix one. Typically this applies to the front plate.

Running a red while turning left on green arrow only is another, at least here. However, knowing statute probably won't get you out of a citation. Most likely, it will prolong the issuance and add to the list of violations.
