My dinner is staring at me...
I was having an enjoyable meal with my girl tonight and came around to this looking back at me.I think it is laughing at me. Should i eat it?

The bravest (perhaps most desperate?) man ever was the first man to eat an oyster.

I have to say that the oyster in that pic looks a bit dodgy to me.
As a buddy of mine used to say "not only do they look like pussy, you also have to treat them like pussy". In other words always give an oyster a good sniff before eating. If it smells like fish don't eat it! That simple. A fresh live oyster should smell like the sea; like salt air and sunshine; like happy underpants. And they should look fresh. Here's some we had on the weekend. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1320768887.jpg |
Yum... looks like either Kusshi or Dabob Bay on top.. two of my favorites.
|
Dottore; after reading your post I have made the termination that the, uh, 1 in the 1st pic has been around the block.....
|
It is not staring at you... it is winking!
I love oysters... as said fresh is the only way to go... preferably you should be able to watch the person opening them for you. |
Blue Oyster Club. Fluffy stuff.
Oh and I assure you, it looks even worse once eaten and returned. I know that for a fact. |
up here we only eat oysters in months that have an "R" in them
down south not to sure what the rule of thumb is. the one in the first photo looks tiny and dried out compared to the fresh fat ones we get. dottore's look much tastier. |
The oysters i was eating were steamed which is why they look smaller and shrivelled compared to the other ones posted. I have not tried a raw oyster yet but i may work up to that.
Mine tasted great and my intestinal tract is in the same condition it was before the experience. I did think that oyster leering at me with that silly grin was pretty funny, though. Should i try them raw? |
OMG! YES! Try them raw! I LOVE LOVE LOVE raw oysters. With a little horseradish, lemon, and Tabasco. Oh geez, now I have to find an oyster bar tonight...

I was vacationing at Morro Bay, there is a nice restaurant on the Bay... Widows on the sea IIRC. They had 75 cent oyster night. They were fresh on ice and seaweed and shucked as you order them. They had an excellent wine list and the bar tender (who was the owner) was very knowledgeable about wine and friendly. I sat at the bar and slurped oysters and fine wine all night then walked back to the hotel. When they brought the bill I had consumed 72 raw oysters. |
If it's still alive, yes.

I had me a little staycation in the french qtr a couple weeks ago, and the oysters i had @ Acme were smallish, pricey( damn oil spills) and not what i'm used to here in LA.I guess thats what i get for going tourist.Shoulda jumped on the streetcar and went to Cooter Browns. I will try again when i get home next week. the later the yr gets, the better the ersters get. Teenerted We follow the R rule down south as well. It supposedly comes from pre-refrigeration days which basically means, don't eat oysters in the summer. Good advice because they're small anyway that time of yr. |
