There you have it. Have fun Speedy!

That MB straight six is a great motor, wonder why it is a salvage, looks very not bad. I like the wood on the interior, is it faux wood?

speeder 11-19-2011 11:06 PM

MB has never put fake wood in a car, AFAIK.

porsche4life 11-19-2011 11:09 PM

Looks like the real wood in our M3....

Oh no.

Seeing that particular car gives me a headache.

I am working with it's exact TWIN (right down to the branded title, chrome wheels and black guts) right now. Owner butchered up the harness trying to "repair" it and now it won't start- we just finished the HG on it.

Oh and mine:

Hey Randy, I remembered that you had one of the C36s here. Looks great in silver.

Yeah, that's a really similar heap to mine. Has it been punched hard? Mine doesn't seem to have been. The picture of the short block looks like it was exposed to the elements, (and moisture), for quite awhile. Mine is still running, (albeit w/ some really old fuel in it), so it should look fine when I remove the head. Yep, looking again at your pic and that thing was definitely left exposed to the PNW elements w/ no cyl head on it for some time. Bummer. Rusty cylinder walls are not good. :(

speeder 11-20-2011 10:37 AM

I took some better pics of the interior yesterday, it's really not bad at all.

I love the OEM Mercedes Benz cell phone:

With separate dash control: :D

Fix it and enjoy it...

It would be an awesome swap into a w124 wagon. It's been done before.

My buddy Neal did that, and now he is building a meaner one (this is a DD too)

Numbers-matching '69 Z-28 and it's an RS. (Headlight doors). Boner time for me, I love this car since the first time I saw it on the cover of R&T on a track. This was a car designed to race against Porsches on a road track, and they did quite well at the time.

Sweet, I was just watching some Tans Am races from that era on you tube...

What is this car?

My guess is a 959 kit with cheaper head lights...

I have a soft spot for all things AMG. Congrats a saving a great car. Sadly these 3.2 and 3.6L engines are hard on head gaskets, but lots of tips and threads on this repair.

Looking forward to updates.

They do go through head gaskets but often w/o any overheating or other damaging results. They just start leaking oil, (either internally/externally or both), which is what happened with mine.

It's real, I tried to refinish the window switch panel in my C36 but was never happy with the results. The depth of the OEM finish is difficult to duplicate.

I dont think it is layered varnish. The finish lloks more like the 2 part plastic/epoxy table top coating stuff from a hobby store to me. It even turns yellow and cracks like that stuff and pulls off in big chunks.

Great project, Denis. And thanks for the pics of the R5 and Z/28 (one of my favorites). :)

I was going to ask the same question. Looks like a 959 wannabe... Love the light covers.

The flag mirrors look just wrong with that body. :(

speeder 11-21-2011 08:51 AM

I'll try to get another picture of that car when I go back there, it's some kind of bodykit thing.

DonDavis 11-21-2011 09:07 AM

sub'd. Nice score Denis. Looking forward to seeing it's resurrection.

speeder 03-15-2012 10:50 PM

Finally got off my ass

And did the head gasket job on this car over the last 2 days. It was a piece of cake except for the cleaning out the oil from the cooling system, which I haven't really done yet. The good news is that this HG failure is so common that MB makes a special cleaner for getting the oil out and i'm picking some up tomorrow. :)

The head was more or less perfect, un-warped surface and no cracks. I just cleaned it and the block up really well and put a new HG on it. This was at the advice of the most respected MB machinist in town, FWIW. I had him look the head over, (he's done hundreds of MB heads), the surface was perfect and it's never been shaved. The CCs looked fantastic, very little carbon and plugs show a great burn. Lucked-out so far.

Congrats Denis! Was lining up the cams straighforward? Is the oil pump driven off the crank?
Yasin

speeder 03-16-2012 08:03 AM

Yes and yes. There is a variocam sprocket on the intake cam that needs to be set correctly, (fully retarded), but otherwise nothing special.

That looks expensive!

Slight difference between the way that short block looks and mine. Just sayin'...
