2 of the 7 knives are completed

Managed to finish 2 of the 7 knives that I was working on. They are both the same color so I only took a photo of one. If the blade looks a little cloudy it is because I put a good coat of oil on it.

n_hall 12-08-2011 03:46 PM

i still have yet to make a knife, only purchase customs.
i have a michael morris friction folder, and a fiddleback forge runt.

Joeaksa 12-08-2011 04:03 PM

Really nice!

futuresoptions 12-08-2011 05:43 PM

Thanks Guys!

The knives are 5160 steel, homemade denim micarta and stainless pins and lanyard tube. I made two black/blue handles, two black handles, two black/brown handles and one brown/olive handle. I will being finishing the two black handled knives tomorrow and will post pictures. I can only get two sheaths made a day.

Hey n_hall, I lurk over at bladeforums, but I am not very active.

What is a knife like for?

Flieger 12-08-2011 09:56 PM

How did you put the hole in the super-metal? Solid carbide bit?

azasadny 12-09-2011 02:29 AM

Very nice!

Nope, just checked the tracking info and bits aren't scheduled to be delivered till the 12th. They are still showing to be in LA:(. I already have some micarta made up so if the do show up on the 12th I may be able to get the holes drilled and handles done up rather quickly and we may just have a giveaway prior to Xmas.

The pics I took last night really didn't show the polish on the blades very well (I really should have wiped the oil off). These pics are off of one of the black handled knives that I am working on today.

Got one of the brown/black ones done today(too cold & nasty to do anymore). It's amazing to me how much the brown/black denim micarta looks like wood. I could not get the camera to do them justice in the photos.

At a guess... Cooking, Skinning and general field duties.

I wouldn't use it to cut or carve timber. OK for Rope, Canvas, etc.

For Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York.... best knife scenes in a movie.

BINGO!!!!

Me and my customer talked about the knife design prior to me designing the blades.

Self Defense was on the top of the list. This is because of things in the South Texas brush that can attack you when you least expect it. This meant that I needed a curved blade and a good point that could penetrate in a thrust. This design slices while you are puncturing.

Skinning, we wanted the knife to be a decent skinner.

Cooking, we wanted the knife to be able to be used at camp in the kitchen if need be.

and general light duty work. Cutting rope etc...

When I did the heat treat on this 5160, I left the blade rigid for better edge retention than for general durability.

This means it willl be difficult for most to sharpen but will keep a great edge. It also means that if you try to use the knife as a survival knife and baton wood with it or pry with it that you will more than likely snap the blade.

The first time the knife is sharpened it may take hours to do correctly, but once its done, if done correctly, it will last a long time and only take a bit of work on a good stone to keep up to snuff.

Most people do not know how to sharpen a knife correctly these days. I am very lucky that I was taught by old timers.

I have LOTS of old broken gunstocks. some with nice wood. They can't be used for guns but it would be a shame to use them as firewood. Would you like some walnut? I'll just send it to you ....freebie.
