Macbook pro fan control

Any of you MBP users have any sort of fan control software? I had a conversation with someone about one, and now can't remember who the hell it was...

?

Why do you need fan control software?

wdfifteen 12-11-2011 04:54 AM

Sorry, not familiar with it. I have a base with a fan in it that I use when I'm doing graphics or watching videos. It's USB powered.

Download Fan Control for Mac - Adjusts minimum fan speed on MacBooks. MacUpdate.com

Download smcFanControl for Mac - Control Intel Mac fans to make them run cooler. MacUpdate.com

Download iCyclone for Mac - Set MacBook minimum fan speed. MacUpdate.com

I'll look into those SM. Whoever I was discussing this with said theirs didn't get as hot all the time. Just would be nice if my laptop didn't get nuclear when I am watching a video, etc...

I use a cool pad, when the computer is on so it the cool pad, 20bucks at any wally world

porsche4life 12-11-2011 09:58 AM

I've seen the cool pads but thats something else to drag around with my laptop. I downloaded SMC just now, and I've watched the temp tumble down in the last few minutes.

HardDrive 12-11-2011 09:58 AM

I've got to ask.....is your laptop sitting on a pillow/blanket when you are watching video?

porsche4life 12-11-2011 09:59 AM

Sitting on my lap quite frequently..

Mine gets to sun-surface temps as well. I use a cool pad but I'm stoked to see if this software works thanks.

So, you want to turn your fan down so that your CPU over heats and eventually dies?

That sounds like an awesome plan.

I too have MBP and when I'm hitting the CPU hard the fan goes up. I use an app to monitor it and I can usually keep things normal by making sure my utilization is normal. Normally though it is a stray process that is causing the high CPU. The fan monitoring app provides me with a bit more information that just simply the sound of the fan. Check your activity monitor to see why the fan is spinning up while you're watching a DVD. It's usually related to a process that is hitting the CPU hard. IF it isn't the DVD and it is something else - troubleshoot that.

Quite the opposite mike... I want to ramp up the idle speed of the fan, so the damn thing isn't as hot all the time...

island911 12-11-2011 11:14 AM

You could get one of those cooled lap-desks.

porsche4life 12-11-2011 11:15 AM

Which is another damn device to drag around....

I have a MacBook Pro, 13.3 screen. I wasn't aware that this thing had a fan at all- It is silent, never gets hot.

-My old Sony Vaio on the other hand could heat the room and really wasn't stage-3 compliant!

Since installing the software this morning my temp has gone down from 126 F to 109 avg. That's with 4000 RPM's. I'll take it. You could fry an egg on the bottom of my MBP. Now there's only one hot bottom in the house and that's my wife's.

tangerine911S 12-11-2011 07:12 PM

SMC Fan Control is where its at. Good simple program you can control from the top menu bar. Great for when its getting hot but wont kick the fans up. Make custom settings for 3000rpm, 4000rpm, 5000rpm.

porsche4life 12-11-2011 07:54 PM

Yup, I'm using SMC now and have noticed it running cooler. I'll play with it a bit and get it optimized.
